研究室紹介

Professor Hye-Joon Yoon's research lab specializes in literary history, critical theory, and the cultural politics of canon formation, with a focus on the intersections of literature, publishing, and ideology in the 19th and 20th centuries. The lab explores how literary reputations are constructed through periodical culture, institutional publishing networks, and rhetorical strategies in key texts. It also investigates the ideological underpinnings of literary canons and the role of intellectual figures—such as George Eliot, Virginia Woolf, and Adam Smith—in negotiating power, identity, and historical temporality. The lab employs interdisciplinary methods, combining literary studies with historical, linguistic, and sociological analysis.

The "Author of 'Scenes of Clerical Life'": George Eliot and Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine
Hye-Joon Yoon
근대영미소설

The senalization of a relatively obscure writer's Scenes of Clerical Life in Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine was crucial in the process of the transformation of Marian Evans, the reviewer of Westminster Review, into George Eliot, the author of best-sellers published by Blackwood and Sons. The immediate question that this change raises concerns the clear difference in political stance between the two periodicals, Westminster and Blackwood's, the former inheriting, albeit in a diminished form, the

Considering the crucial importance of introducing the history of Korean literature to the English-speaking world, without which no viable recognition of the value and significance of individual works of Korean literature is conceivable, one cannot come to the conclusion that what Peter H. Lee offers in his undoubtedly monumental and epoch-making A History of Korean Literature, remaining as it does as the only book of its kind, leaves yet much to be desired. The lack of a clear principle in divid

The Rhetoric of Tenses in Adam Smith's The Wealth of Nations
Hye-Joon Yoon

The Rhetoric of Tenses in Adam Smith's "The Wealth of Nations" examines the tenses of the predicates in the famous and typical passages of the monumental work to explore the intricacies of the rhetoric and argument they support, paying particular attention to the question of temporality. Smith's subtle modulation of language attests to his reluctance to offer a mere theory of economics and to his refusal to ignore the complicated challenges history and actuality offer to his beliefs in the natur

1930년대의 버지니아 울프: 제국과 파시즘의 문제
윤혜준

The right to a fuller recognition of Virignia Woolf as a major critic of Empire and fascism yet merits renewed emphasis particularly in this conjuncture of the first years of a new century where renewed forms of old imperial projects of military invasion and wars of conquest forcibly remind us of the fatal importance of the 1930s as the pivotal decade of struggle between the fascist powers and the alliance of “progressive” forces, which so ominously paved the path for a twentieth century marked

Moderately answering Franco Moretti’s challenge to reject “close reading” in favour of “distant reading,” this paper presents factual aspects of the London publishing market, which deserves our attention as the matrix and field of the production of the novels, including the celebrated canonical works. Among the thriving sectors of London in the nineteenth century one can include the publishing and printing industry, which benefitted from more than a history of a continuously expanding free market

Despite the apparent poststructuralist consensus that the question of canon has been effectively dealt with by (critical) theory, which presumably dispelled the oppressive mysticism of the quasi-religious aura of the canonical classics, the less visible, concealed or repressed question of canonicity haunts contemporary critical theory, especially as it transforms itself into an academic institution replete with reading lists, curricula, readers, and degree-granting authority. Canon formations, f

Metropolis and Experience: Defoe, Dickens, Joyce
Hye-Joon Yoon

Metropolis and Experience: Defoe, Dickens, Joyce offers a close reading of the major texts of Defoe, Dickens, and Joyce, in their respective historical contexts and in comparison with their intertextual companions, from seventeenth-century character pamphlets through Baudelaire to Calvino. In doing so, it challenges the quietist complacency of specialization prevalent in current academia to contribute to a critique of urban modernity in the tradition of Simmel, Benjamin, and Lefebvre. Taking its

The emergence and suppression of footnotes in early modern English literature constitutes the privileged moment in literary history allowing us to enjoy the spectacular confrontation between the objective forces of modern book market and the authorial self-consciousness of those taking part in it, which we characterize as an aesthetics of Hegelian "unhappy consciousness," of being at once in and above the levelling realm where "dunces" and hacks roam. Whereas the seventeenth-century marginal not

Translating Ch’unhyangga: The Problems and a Strategy
윤혜준

No national literary tradition can expect to gain recognition, much less respect, from other cultures without conveying to them a tangible sense of the "greatness" of those works forming its classical canon, which can never be achieved without a convincing and solid translation of the original. Ch’unhyangga, the p’ansori version of Ch’unhyangjŏn, whose importance and value few Koreans would contend, still waits to be given that favor of proper English translation, which, above all, has to do jus

Yoon, Hye-Joon (2006). Joyce and France: The French Context of Ulysses. Foreign Literature Studies, 22, 95-114. Although the close affinity Joyce has with France and French literature is generally acknowledged, the precise link of his representative work Ulysses to French novels still needs to be spelled out with greater specificity. This link we locate in Édouard Dujardin’s Les Lauriers sont coupés, which, to judge from various biographical records and accounts, Joyce read and st

Abel Magwitch and Convict Transportation: A Note on the Legal History behind the Fiction

This paper goes into the details of English penal law relevant to the case of Magwitch. At common law, crime against property were considered capital crimes. Such rigidity being intolerable in the actual law courts, it became the judges’ responsibility to be prudent in passing on the sentence of death. Of the traditional measures of mitigation, benefit of clergy retained its importance as an administrative device, as is depicted in the case of Compeyson. Above all, transportation was adopted ext
