Professor Hye-kyung Cho's research lab specializes in atmospheric and environmental sciences, with a focus on tropical meteorology and climate dynamics. The lab investigates large-scale atmospheric wave modes, such as Kelvin waves and the Madden–Julian Oscillation, using satellite data like TRMM to analyze precipitation and outgoing longwave radiation. A significant part of the research also involves statistical modeling of rainfall distributions, particularly comparing gamma and lognormal distributions for accurate precipitation modeling. Additionally, the lab contributes to clinical health research, particularly in pediatric infectious diseases like bacterial meningitis, emphasizing epidemiological trends and outcomes in Korean populations.

Bacterial meningitis remains a serious cause of morbidity and mortality in childhood,despite the availability of effective vaccines against Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) or Streptococcus pneumoniae.
