研究室紹介

Professor Hye Won Shin's research lab specializes in second language (L2) education, with a strong focus on individual differences in language learning, particularly among young and adolescent learners. The lab investigates cognitive and affective factors such as aptitude, metacognitive awareness, motivation, and learner autonomy in relation to listening comprehension, vocabulary acquisition, and speaking development. A key research direction involves exploring the impact of emerging technologies—especially AI-mediated interaction—on L2 speaking and writing skills, as well as learner perceptions and engagement. The lab also examines teacher-related variables, including native-speaking teachers’ perceptions and experiences, to inform effective language teaching practices.

INVESTIGATING THE ROLE OF COGNITIVE VARIABLES IN SECOND LANGUAGE LEARNERS’ LISTENING COMPREHENSION: APTITUDE AND METACOGNITIVE AWARENESS
Sarah Sok, Hye Won Shin
SJR Q1International Journal of Listening

The influence of individual difference variables on second language (L2) listening comprehension has been an area of research that has been gaining renewed attention in recent years. The current study investigated the effects of two cognitive variables, aptitude and metacognitive awareness, on 107 native-Korean, English as a foreign language learners’ listening comprehension. Moreover, the study examined whether metacognitive awareness mediated the relationship between aptitude and L2 listening

Exploring which test-taker characteristics predict young L2 learners’ performance on listening and reading comprehension tests

SJR Q1Language Testing

Test-taker characteristics (TTCs), or individual difference variables, are known to be a systematic source of variance in language test performance. Although previous research has documented the impact of a range of TTCs on second language (L2) learners’ test performance, few of these studies have involved young learners. Given that young L2 learners undergo rapid maturational changes in their cognitive abilities, are susceptible to affective factors in unique ways, and have little autonomy with

Student satisfaction and perceived learning in an online second language learning environment: A replication of Gray and DiLoreto (2016)
Hye Won Shin, Sarah Sok
SJR Q1ReCALLOA

Abstract The current study is an approximate replication of Gray and DiLoreto’s (2016) study, which proposed a model predicting that course structure, learner interaction and instructor presence would influence students’ perceived learning and satisfaction in online learning, with student engagement acting as a mediator between two of the predictors and the outcome variables. Using mixed methods, the current study investigated whether Gray and DiLoreto’s model would be able to explain the relati

SJR Q1IRAL - International Review of Applied Linguistics in Language Teaching

Abstract This study examined the moderating role of two individual difference factors, metacognitive awareness of listening and motivation, in young second language (L2) learners’ incidental vocabulary acquisition from listening to stories. Participants were 66 fifth-grade English as a Foreign Language learners in South Korea who were randomly assigned to one of two groups: listening to stories or control. A vocabulary meaning recognition test was administered as a pretest, posttest, and delayed

The present study investigated newly recruited native-speaking teachers of the English Programin Korea (EPIK) with a focus on their individual characteristics, their perceptions on second language (L2) learning and teaching processes, and their teaching experience as a variable (novice vs. expert) in their understanding of language learning and teaching processes. A questionnaire wasgiven to 244 EPIK teachers. Analysis of the self-reported data revealed that EPIK teachers were mostly in their 20

Sarah Sok, Hye Won Shin
SJR Q1TESOL QuarterlyOA

Abstract The current study investigated the impact of AI‐mediated interaction on L2 learners' oral speaking ability, summarizing ability, and perceptions. Participants were EFL university students from South Korea who were randomly assigned to one of three groups: aiSPEAK, aiSUM, and control. The two experimental groups, aiSPEAK and aiSUM, engaged in interactional exchanges with ChatGPT‐3.5 to complete oral summary tasks, while the control group completed the same tasks without using an AI tool.

Linguistic Differences in the Writing Performance of Adolescent EFL Learners : The Influence of Independent and Integrated Tasks
Hye Won Shin, Hyun Jung Kim

This study investigates the different linguistic effects that independent (writing-only) and integrated (reading-to-write) tasks have on adolescent English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners’ writing performance. An automated tool, Coh-Metrix, is employed to examine how productive skills are affected by the two types of tasks. In a 2x2x2 study design, 122 randomly assigned 11th-grade EFL students took both independent and integrated writing assessments. The results reveal that the two types of

Vocabulary Learning and InstructionOA

This study reports on the psychometric evaluation of a second language vocabulary test. The test measured target words within a given lesson using a sample of 142 adolescent EFL learners. The test was a modified word association test designed to asses students' ability to identify paradigmatic and syntagmatic relations between words. The study was an outgrowth of research examining how different instructional techniques affect deep word knowledge in elementary school-aged EFL learners over time.
