Professor Hyo-Cheol Kim's research lab specializes in interventional radiology and image-guided cancer therapies, with a primary focus on hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs). The lab investigates advanced embolic techniques such as transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) and yttrium-90 radioembolization (TARE), emphasizing optimization of drug delivery systems, imaging biomarkers, and treatment response evaluation. Key research directions include the characterization of extrahepatic collateral vessels, in-vitro and in-vivo pharmacokinetic studies of Lipiodol-based embolic agents, and the development of accurate radiological criteria for tumor diagnosis and treatment planning.

15Extrahepatic collateral arteries commonly supply hepatocellular carcinomas if the tumors are large or peripherally located. Because development of these vessels interferes with effective control of the tumor with transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE), radiologists should become familiar with the imaging findings of extrahepatic collateral vessels to detect them at an early stage. Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) are the most common mesenchymal neoplasms of the gastrointestinal tract and are defined by their expression of KIT (CD117). This article includes 109 pathologically proven GISTs, with emphasis on their various computed tomography (CT) features. Although the images of GISTs on the CT scan are often distinct from those of epithelial tumors, radiologists should be familiar with these features for the accurate diagnosis of GISTs.

On contrast-enhanced CT, primary gastrointestinal stromal tumors in the omentum and mesentery are usually well-defined, huge masses that contain large areas of low-attenuation necrosis and hemorrhage and that lack central gas.
We believe that perfusion CT is a feasible alternative modality for the successful early response assessment and early detection of a marginally recurred tumor after TACE. However, perfusion CT has limitations for the prediction of tumor recurrence after TACE.
The study data demonstrate the diagnostic value of unenhanced images interpreted in conjunction with biphasic CT images for follow-up of patients who have previously been treated with TACE for HCC.
