Professor Hyojin Kim's research lab specializes in biomedical and biotechnological applications of natural compounds, microbial communities, and advanced biosensors. The lab investigates neuroprotective agents like piceatannol against neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s, explores the role of genome editing (e.g., CRISPR/Cas9) in metabolic engineering of yeast for food safety, and studies microbial fermentation processes in traditional Korean foods. Additionally, the lab develops innovative biosensing technologies using EMG and IMU data for human motion estimation, integrating bioelectronics with clinical and biotechnological applications.

Actinomycete strain VC-A46T, which exhibits antifungal activity, was isolated from a soil sample collected from Cheonan, Korea. The strain was determined to belong to the genus Streptomyces, based on its morphological and chemotaxonomic characteristics. The cell wall of this strain contained ll-diaminopimelic acid. The gajami-sikhae, traditional Korean cuisine fermented with flat fish, samples were collected from eight different manufacturers (GS1-GS8). In this paper, we proposes an algorithm to estimate the overall arm motion using the MYO armband attached to the upper arm.
