研究室紹介

Professor Hyon-Sob Kim's research lab focuses on the intersection of architectural theory, phenomenology, and aesthetic philosophy, particularly exploring the role of play, intuition, and humanistic values in modern and contemporary architecture. The lab investigates how architects like Alvar Aalto and Terunobu Fujimori challenge technology-oriented rationalism by integrating poetic, ludic, and sensory dimensions into design. Central themes include the critique of instrumental rationality, the reimagining of architectural form through metaphysical and cultural metaphors, and the evolution of traditional housing typologies such as the Korean hanok in response to modernity.

Alvar Aalto and Humanizing of Architecture
Hyon-Sob Kim
SJR Q1Journal of Asian Architecture and Building EngineeringOA

The purpose of this paper is to review Aalto's design conception on the basis of his critique of technology-oriented rationalism. Arguably, his critical attitude was best illustrated in his article 'The Humanizing of Architecture' (1940), which anticipates Adorno and Horkheimer's criticism against instrumentalized rationality (1944). For Aalto, true rationalism should be synthetic in order to cover all fields of human activities. However, man is not only a rational being but also a player. Aalto

Tetsuro Yoshida (1894–1956) and architectural interchange between East and West
Hyon-Sob Kim
SJR Q3Architectural Research Quarterly

‘I have long been dreaming a dream: that I am a drop of dew on the leaf of a nameless plant deep in the valley of some far-off mountain range. The dewdrop rolls down into a little brook and mingles with its waters; the brook flows into a river which in turn discharges into the sea, and the waves of the sea in their turn lave the coasts of all the countries of the earth. Thus I picture to myself the cultural interchange of all peoples, and it has been my wish to take part, even if only as one lit

The Samcheong Hanok and the Evolution of the Traditional Korean House
Yong-Hee Lee, Hyon-Sob Kim
SJR Q1SustainabilityOA

The hanok or traditional Korean house has evolved to meet modern conditions that are continually updated. The “Samcheong Hanok” located in Bukchon, the most representative hanok village in Seoul, is a typical example. The house was originally constructed around 1940 but underwent several stages of extension and repairs before finally being renovated by architect Wook Choi in 2000. It is arguable that the evolution of the Samcheong Hanok illustrates a typical history of modern hanok, which is cha

This paper aims at researching the Japanese architect Terunobu Fujimori's (1946~) diploma design <Bridge: The Method of Ledoux for Giving Reality to Images through Illusion> (1971) and its relation with the present works, focusing on the scenario of 'City ruined->Nature reborn->Building reconstructed' and on Claude-Nicolas Ledoux's method of illusion. Fujimori's suggestion of totally ruining the existing city Sendai to solve pollution problems caused by its industrialization is a strong reaction

A Study on the Influence of Japanese Tokonoma on Aalto's Art Display Concept in Villa Mairea (1937-39)
Hyon-Sob Kim
SJR Q4Journal of architectural history

The Villa (1937-39) designed by Alvar Aalto (1898-1976) has been studied by many researchers from various viewpoints. However, few studies have devoted their attention to the major issue raised by Aalto at the Yale University lecture and Mairea article in arkitekten in 1939. The issue is to fuse art with life in the living room with mobile partition walls that can function both as art exhibition walls and as art storage cabinets at the same time. Through this device, he maintained, the client ca

근대 집합주택 디자인의 또 다른 전통

Collective housing design was one of the most important themes in modern architecture. Although rationalism in architecture contributed much to the development of collective housing, instrumentalised rationality tended to reduce human dwelling to mere results of architects' own aesthetics or scientific calculation. As an antithesis, this study suggests the design of Alvar Aalto (1898-1976), who has been regarded as a representative figure of a different stream in modern architecture. The transit

The appearance of Korean architecture in the modern West
Hyon-Sob Kim
SJR Q3Architectural Research Quarterly

Although the general influence of the architecture of East Asian countries on the formation and development of modern architecture has been widely recognised, detailed evidence about the extent and nature of this influence has been accruing through a growing body of research. This began with Chinoiserie, a Chinese-style fashion around the eighteenth century in Europe, which was imprinted in the Rococo interior as well as in the jardin anglo-chinois with its Chinese pavilions. Then in the late ni

Tracing the Architectural Origin of the Bosung College Library (1935~37)
Hyon-Sob Kim
SJR Q4Journal of architectural historyOA

The purpose of this paper is to trace the architectural origin of the Bosung College Library (1935~37), which is currently used as Graduate School Building of Korea University. So far, numerous books have repeatedly described that the library was modelled on a Duke University library, but without any serious consideration. Through literature review, field-trip and archives investigation, this research discovered new critical facts concerning the origin of the building. First, Dong-Jin Park, the

A Study on the Piercing Column of Terunobu Fujimori Architecture
Hyon-Sob Kim
SJR Q4Journal of architectural historyOA

This paper aimed at investigating into the origin and meaning of the Japanese architect Terunobu Fujimori's 'piercing column', and drew a conclusion as follows. First, the piercing column that made its first appearance in his architect debut work Jinchokan Moriya Historical Museum (1991) was conceived unexpectedly from pencil lines on a sketch that went through over the building's roof. And the tree-like natural treatment of the column's surface was influenced by Takamasa Yoshizaka's description

Korean heat radiated: from Frank Lloyd Wright’s Usonian houses to postwar mass-produced houses in America
Hyon-Sob Kim
SJR Q3Architectural Research QuarterlyOA

After experiencing a floor-heated ‘Korean room’ in Tokyo in the 1910s (possibly in 1920), Frank Lloyd Wright (1867–1959) applied its operating principle to his Usonian houses, starting with the Jacobs House I (1936–7). Successively, Wright’s heating method, along with other Usonian features, was applied to many postwar mass-produced houses, particularly those by Levitt & Sons in New York and Eichler Homes in California, two representative housing development companies in mid-century America.

The purpose of this paper is to show how the Finnish modern architect Alvar Aalto's (1898-1976) works were adopted and transformed in the contemporary context, through a study of the Aveiro Library (1988-95) skylight by the Portuguese architect Alvaro Siza (1933-). The Aveiro skylight is the 'Viipuri-type skylight' based on that of Aalto's Viipuri Library (1927-35), which arrayed a series of circular skylights to introduce diffused indirect light to the interior. In the Aveiro, however, the arti
