Professor Hyoseok Nam's research lab focuses on translational stroke research, with a strong emphasis on improving post-stroke outcomes through advanced data-driven modeling and regenerative therapies. The lab investigates biomarkers such as trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) to enhance cardiovascular risk prediction and explores the therapeutic potential of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) in promoting neurovascular repair after ischemic stroke. Utilizing Bayesian networks and clinical decision support systems, the lab develops interpretable, high-accuracy prediction models for functional recovery and mortality after stroke.

15Trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) is produced when trimethylamine, a waste product of gut microbes, is converted via hepatic flavin monooxygenases. As TMAO is a potential causative factor in various cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) considerable research interest has arisen on its use as a biomarker. Higher TMAO levels are associated with future risk of both incident CVD in the general population and established CVD, including stroke. The addition of TMAO into models with traditional risk factors signi
Importance: Optimal blood pressure (BP) control after successful reperfusion with endovascular thrombectomy (EVT) for patients with acute ischemic stroke is unclear. Objective: To determine whether intensive BP management during the first 24 hours after successful reperfusion leads to better clinical outcomes than conventional BP management in patients who underwent EVT. Design, Setting, and Participants: Multicenter, randomized, open-label trial with a blinded end-point evaluation, conducted ac
Bayesian network is an increasingly popular method in modeling uncertain and complex problems, because its interpretability is often more useful than plain prediction. To satisfy the core requirement in medical research to obtain interpretable prediction with high accuracy, we constructed an inference engine for post-stroke outcomes based on Bayesian network classifiers. The prediction system that was trained on data of 3,605 patients with acute stroke forecasts the functional independence at 3
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The determination of stroke etiology is essential for planning treatment for stroke prevention. However, the etiology of stroke is undetermined in many patients. METHODS: During a 10-year period, consecutive patients with acute ischemic stroke were enrolled. The stroke etiology was determined based on the Trial of ORG 10172 in Acute Stroke Treatment classification. Long-term mortality and causes of death were identified using death certificates. The standardized mortality
BACKGROUND: The need for rapid evaluation and treatment of acute stroke patients has been well documented. A computerized physician order entry (CPOE) system can improve communication and provide immediate access to information, which may be useful for an effective team approach program targeted to reduce in-hospital time delays. METHODS: To reduce the time from a patient's arrival at the emergency department to thrombolysis, a team approach program using CPOE was developed, and its efficacy was
In a permanent model of rodent MCAO, very early transplantation of human MSCs (1 h after MCAO) produced greater neurological recovery and decreased infraction volume. The elevation of MMP-2 activity and the increase in vascular density after MSC treatment suggest that MSCs might help promote angiogenesis and lead to neurological improvement during the recovery phase after ischemic stroke.
The presence of simple aortic plaques may be a marker of advanced vascular disease. Detection of simple aortic plaques during transesophageal echocardiography may have clinical implications because patients with these plaques frequently had concomitant intracranial atherosclerosis, a risk factor for stroke.
Information technology and mobile health are useful tools for management of stroke patients from the acute period to rehabilitation. Further improvement of technology will change and enhance stroke prevention and treatment.
BACKGROUND: Subtle abnormal motor signs are indications of serious neurological diseases. Although neurological deficits require fast initiation of treatment in a restricted time, it is difficult for nonspecialists to detect and objectively assess the symptoms. In the clinical environment, diagnoses and decisions are based on clinical grading methods, including the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) score or the Medical Research Council (MRC) score, which have been used to measur
PURPOSE: The benefits of thrombolytic treatment are time-dependent. We developed a smartphone application that aids stroke patient self-screening and hospital selection, and may also decrease hospital arrival time. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The application was developed for iPhone and Android smartphones. Map data for the application were adopted from the open map. For hospital registration, a web page (http://stroke119.org) was developed using PHP and MySQL. RESULTS: The Stroke 119 application inc
BACKGROUND: Sex hormones may be associated with a higher incidence of ischemic stroke or stroke-related events. In observational studies, lower testosterone concentrations are associated with infirmity, vascular disease, and adverse cardiovascular risk factors. Currently, female sexual hormones are considered neuroprotective agents. The purpose of this study was to assess the role of sex hormones and the ratio of estradiol/testosterone (E/T) in patients with acute ischemic stroke (AIS). METHODS:
Saxatilin, a novel disintegrin purified and cloned from the venom of the Korean snake Gloydius saxatilis, strongly inhibits activation and aggregation of platelets. Glycoprotein (GP) IIb/IIIa receptor antagonists can resolve thrombus, so saxatilin might also have thrombolytic effects. We investigated the thrombolytic effects of saxatilin in mice using a ferric chloride-induced carotid arterial thrombosis model. Thrombotic occlusion and thrombus resolution were evaluated quantitatively by measuri
The degree of thrombus resolution directly indicates the effectiveness of a thrombolytic drug. We investigated the degree of thrombus resolution and factors associated with thrombus resolution after intravenous (IV) recombinant tissue plasminogen activator (rt-PA) using thin-section noncontrast computed tomography (NCT). Thin-section NCTs were performed before and immediately after IV rt-PA infusion in acute stroke patients. The thrombus volume and Hounsfield unit were measured using three-dimen
