Professor Hyosoon Park's research lab focuses on clinical and translational biomedical research, with a strong emphasis on infectious disease diagnostics, endocrine and metabolic disorders, and cardiovascular risk markers. The lab investigates molecular diagnostics for antibiotic resistance in *Helicobacter pylori*, explores hormonal and metabolic biomarkers such as anti-Müllerian hormone in polycystic ovary syndrome, and examines the impact of nutritional interventions and vitamin D status on metabolic and cardiovascular health. The lab also evaluates clinical decision support systems to improve patient safety and response times in critical care settings.

SJR Q1Helicobacter

BACKGROUND: Assessment of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) clarithromycin resistance has rarely been performed routinely despite an increasing resistance rate. Our aim was to develop and evaluate the use of dual-priming oligonucleotide (DPO)-based multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to detect point mutations in the 23S rRNA gene responsible for clarithromycin resistance of H. pylori. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Gastric biopsy specimens from 212 untreated patients with dyspepsia were examined by

The aim of the present study was to compare the associations of anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) with clinical or biochemical characteristics between women with and without polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). We also explored the optimal cutoff point of AMH to diagnose PCOS. A cross-sectional study was performed in 87 women diagnosed with PCOS and 53 healthy control subjects. Body mass index (BMI), indices of insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome-related variables, reproductive hormones and serum AMH

Under conditions satisfying the requirements of the Friedewald formula, the DLDL-C and FLDL-C differed significantly over the concentration ranges of both TC and TG. In an evaluation of patients with hyperlipidemia, the Friedewald calculation may underestimate the risk for coronary heart disease.

SJR Q1Journal of Clinical Laboratory AnalysisOA

BACKGROUND: The effects of age, gender, and seasonal variation on human levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) are not well understood. In this study, we aimed to investigate 25(OH)D status according to these factors in a Korean population. METHODS: A total of 303,943 serum 25(OH)D levels were measured using an electrochemiluminescence immunoassay between October 2011 and May 2014. Potential participants were ineligible for the study if they had significant renal, hepatic, or thyroid dysfunctio

SJR Q3Annals of Clinical Biochemistry International Journal of Laboratory Medicine

BACKGROUND: The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of green tea ingestion over four weeks on atherosclerotic biological markers. METHODS: After a one-week baseline period, 12 healthy male volunteers aged 28--42 years drank 600 mL of green tea daily for four weeks. Lipid profile, oxidized low-density lipoprotein (ox-LDL), total antioxidant capacity (TAC), C-reactive protein (CRP) and soluble cell adhesion molecules were measured at baseline and after two and four weeks ingestion

Physicians need to respond to critical value alerts in a timely and appropriate manner. We evaluated the clinical usefulness of a short message service (SMS) system for notifying physicians of critical values by sending a text message to their personal data assistant (PDA) phones. The clinical response times and clinical response rates to notifications of critical hyperkalemia in inpatients in 2001, when the callback system alone was used to alert physicians, were compared to those in 2005, when

BACKGROUND: The association between serum bilirubin levels and incident chronic kidney disease (CKD) in the general population is unknown. We aimed to examine the association between serum bilirubin concentration (total, direct, and indirect) and the risk of incident CKD. METHODS AND FINDINGS: Longitudinal cohort study of 12,823 Korean male workers 30 to 59 years old without CKD or proteinuria at baseline participating in medical health checkup program in a large worksite. Plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 4G/5G promoter polymorphism and coagulation factor VII Arg353→Gln polymorphism in Korean patients with coronary artery disease
Junghan Song, Yeo Min Yoon, Hyun Jin Jung, Seung Ho Hong, Hyosoon Park, Jin Q Kim
SJR Q2Journal of Korean Medical ScienceOA

An increased risk for arterial thrombosis is associated with high plasma levels of coagulation and fibrinolytic factors such as PAI-1 and FVII. In this study, the 4G/5G polymorphism in the promoter of PAI-1 gene and Arg353-->Gln polymorphism in the FVII gene were analysed in 139 normal adults and 158 patients with coronary artery disease (CAD), and their association with plasma lipid traits was investigated. There were no significant differences in the allele frequencies of PAI-1 and FVII polymo

The aims of this study were to estimate the incidences of BCR/ABL, MLL, TEL/AML1 rearrangements, and p16 deletions in childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), to identify new abnormalities, and to demonstrate the usefulness of interphase fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH). We performed G-banding analysis and FISH using probes for BCR/ABL, MLL, TEL/AML1 rearrangements, and p16 deletions on 65 childhood ALL patients diagnosed and uniformly treated at a single hospital. SJR Q1Journal of Clinical Laboratory Analysis

BACKGROUND: The associations of vitamin D deficiency with many nonskeletal diseases are still being discovered. We evaluated the use of an automated immunoassay to measure serum total vitamin D (25-OH) and assessed vitamin D status in a Korean adult population. METHODS: We compared the Elecsys Vitamin D (25-OH) Total Assay (Roche Diagnostics) with liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) using 300 serum samples. Total imprecision was calculated using three levels of quality cont

Microangiopathic Hemolytic Anemia as the First Manifestation of Metastatic Signet Ring Cell Carcinoma of Unknown Origin: A Case Report and Review of Literature
Sang-Yong Shin, Hyosoon Park, Seoung Wan Chae, Hee‐Yeon Woo
SJR Q2Annals of Laboratory MedicineOA

Microangiopathic hemolytic anemia (MAHA) occurs occasionally as a paraneoplastic syndrome in some solid tumors, but MAHA accompanied by signet ring cell carcinoma of an unknown origin is very rare. In this study, we present the case of an 80-yr-old man who was admitted to the hospital because of a 1-month history of lower back pain and dyspnea. He was diagnosed with MAHA on the basis of the laboratory findings that revealed anemia with schistocytes, decreased haptoglobin levels, and a negative d
