研究室紹介

Professor Hyoung-Joon Ahn's research lab focuses on clinical and translational studies in oral medicine, hematology, and transplant medicine, with a strong emphasis on biomarker discovery, masticatory function disorders, and the clinical management of infectious and systemic diseases. The lab investigates the role of inflammatory and hematological markers such as mean platelet volume in thromboembolic diseases, evaluates masticatory function in temporomandibular disorders using objective and subjective measures, and explores the impact of therapeutic interventions—including antiviral therapy and dental bleaching—on clinical outcomes. The research integrates laboratory analysis with clinical data to improve diagnostic accuracy and patient management in oral and systemic conditions.

SJR Q2Platelets

The mean platelet volume (MPV) is a laboratory marker associated with platelet function and activity. Increased MPV in thromboembolic disease is considered an important risk factor. The aim of this study was to compare the MPV and MPV/platelet count (MPV/P) ratio between deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and control subjects. We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of patients (n = 91) admitted due to newly diagnosed DVT from December 2010 to March 2012. The control group (n = 311) underwent he

SJR Q1Journal of Medical VirologyOA

The clinical outcomes of 2,054 renal recipients were examined retrospectively based on pre-transplant hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) status to investigate the efficacy of lamivudine treatment in HBsAg positive recipients. Pre-transplant HBsAg positivity was documented in 66 recipients. The 10-year patient and graft survival rates in Ag positive group were significantly lower than those of Ag negative group (64.4/36.6% vs. 88.2/70.5%, respectively, P < 0.0001). Since 1997, lamivudine was use

SJR Q1Journal of Oral RehabilitationOA

This study examined the differences in the masticatory function of patients with temporomandibular disorder (TMD) in Korea. The experimental groups were as follows: 23 patients with painful arthralgia classified as pain group according to the research diagnostic criteria for temporomandibular disorder (RDC/TMC) and 28 patients with pain-free disc displacement and reduction classified as clicking group. The subjects were obtained from those who had visited Yonsei University Dental Hospital from 2

SJR Q1Journal of Oral RehabilitationOA

This study examined changes in masticatory function after botulinum toxin type A (BTX-A) injection using objective and subjective tests during 12 weeks. Also, we compared differences in masticatory function between group in which only masseter muscle (M group) was injected and group in which masseter and temporal muscle (M-T group) were injected. Forty subjects were assigned into two groups; M group (n = 20) and the M-T group (n = 20). The Meditoxin(®) was used as BTX-A injection. The mixing abi

Dimorphic Candida exist as commensal yeast carriages or infiltrate hyphae in the oral cavity. Here, we investigated the clinical relevance of Candida hyphae in non-pseudomembranous oral candidiasis (OC) by smears of tongue biofilms. We conducted a retrospective study of 2829 patients who had had tongue smears regardless of OC suspicion. Clinical characteristics were evaluated using a novel method of assessing hyphae. Clinical factors (moderate/severe stimulated pain, pain aggravated by stimulati

The aim of this study was to explore the effect of bleaching agents on the release of metal ions and change in physical and chemical characteristics of amalgams. Amalgam surface changes resulting from bleaching on amalgam were assessed with inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrophotometer, an automatic mercury analyzer, a colorimeter, and atomic force microscopy. Analysis of the release of metal ions indicated that the bleaching agent caused more copper, tin, and mercury ions to be r

BACKGROUND: Polyomavirus (PV) nephropathy may coexist with or follow acute renal transplant rejection. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether HLA-DR and CD54 are useful cellular markers for surveillance of acute rejection in PV-infected patients. METHODS: A prospective study was conducted using 205 renal transplant patients. Urine samples were collected at a regular interval post-transplantation for routine cytology and immunocytochemistry. Urinary levels of tumour necrosis factor alpha,

The microarchitecture of collagen fibrils in the articular disc of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) plays an important role in dissipating the mechanical load during jaw movement. However, little information is available on its adaptations to the biomechanical environment during development. To address this issue, we analyzed the diameter of collagen fibrils of the articular disc of the rat TMJ with quantitative ultrastructural analysis during postnatal development. The mean diameter of the col
