Professor Hyoung-Won Cho's research lab specializes in critical care cardiology and intensive care outcomes, with a strong focus on extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) therapy, acute myocardial infarction, and heart failure. The lab investigates clinical outcomes, quality of life, and prognostic factors in critically ill patients, leveraging large-scale national health databases to evaluate treatment efficacy, timing of interventions, and long-term survival. Key research directions include reducing door-to-balloon time in STEMI using AI-driven ECG interpretation, assessing the impact of CRP and statin therapy in heart failure subtypes, and examining the long-term consequences of ECMO, such as chronic respiratory disease and mortality. The lab also explores healthcare system-level factors, including weekend admission effects on ECMO outcomes, to improve clinical decision-making and health policy.

Background: High C-reactive protein (CRP) levels are associated with poor outcomes of heart failure (HF), and statins are known to reduce CRP levels. We investigated the prognostic value of CRP and statin in patients with HF with reduced and preserved ejection fraction (EF). ECMO therapy initiated during a weekend was associated with a slightly increased risk of 60-day mortality compared to that associated with ECMO therapy initiated on a weekday. This association was more evident in patients who received ECMO therapy that started on a Saturday. Further studies are needed to confirm these findings.
