Professor Hyuk Jin Choi's research lab specializes in ophthalmic xenotransplantation and corneal bioengineering, focusing on overcoming donor corneal shortages through the development of decellularized porcine corneal substitutes. The lab investigates immunological responses, including anti-Gal antibody dynamics and cross-reactivity between xeno- and alloantigens, to improve long-term graft survival. Advanced imaging techniques, such as anterior segment optical coherence tomography, are employed to assess corneal and scleral morphology, supporting clinical applications in ocular surface disease. The lab also explores innovative post-processing methods for medical image enhancement, particularly in reducing blocking artifacts in compressed images.

An 18 year old male who had been taking vigabatrin for complex partial seizure was referred for visual field testing. The cumulative vigabatrin dose was about 6.0 kg over the seven and a half year period. There were bilateral symmetric visual field constrictions with greater loss of the nasal field (fig 1). On the retinal nerve fibre layer (RNFL) photographs discernible RNFL losses in the peripheral retina with a relative preservation of papillomacular bundles were observed bilaterally (fig 2).
