Professor Hyun Young Kim's research lab focuses on translational biomedical research with a strong emphasis on clinical neurology, gastrointestinal disorders, and nutritional science. The lab investigates neurodegenerative diseases such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), particularly through the validation and application of clinical assessment tools like the Korean version of the ALSFRS-R. It also explores the pathophysiology and risk factors of gastroesophageal reflux disease, including both erosive and non-erosive types, using endoscopic and epidemiological approaches. Additionally, the lab examines the impact of dietary factors and food processing—such as thermal treatment—on bioactive compounds and antioxidant capacity in fruits and vegetables.

Outer membrane vesicles (OMVs) released from gram-negative bacteria harbor diverse molecules to communicate with host cells. In this study, we evaluated the OMVs of periodontal pathogens for their effects on the activation of dendritic cells and CD4<sup>+</sup> T cell differentiation. OMVs of <i>Porphyromonas gingivalis</i> ATCC 33277, <i>Treponema denticola</i> ATCC 33521, and <i>Tannerella forsythia</i> ATCC 43037 ('red complex' pathogens) were isolated by density gradient ultracentrifugation.
