Professor Hyun-Chang Kim's research lab focuses on epidemiological and population-based studies targeting non-communicable diseases (NCDs), with a strong emphasis on cardiovascular disease, hypertension, liver disease, and dry eye disease (DED). The lab investigates the role of biomarkers—such as serum aminotransferase levels—within normal ranges and their association with long-term health outcomes, including mortality. Utilizing large-scale national health datasets like KNHANES and NHI-Big Data, the lab explores spatial and temporal trends in disease prevalence and management, aiming to identify vulnerable subgroups and inform targeted public health interventions. The research also emphasizes preventive strategies and risk factor modification to reduce the global burden of chronic diseases.

In Korea, the level of hypertension management has considerably improved over the last 20 years. In order to achieve further improvement in hypertension management status, we need to find the vulnerable subgroups and develop subgroup-specific intervention strategies. It is also becoming more important to manage hypertensive patients at older age and those with concurrent chronic diseases.
