MCCARD: MONTE CARLO CODE FOR ADVANCED REACTOR DESIGN AND ANALYSIS
심형진, 한범석, JONG SUNG JUNG, 박호진, 김창효

McCARD is a Monte Carlo (MC) neutron-photon transport simulation code. It has been developed exclusively for the neutronics design of nuclear reactors and fuel systems. It is capable of performing the whole-core neutronics calculations, the reactor fuel burnup analysis, the few group diffusion theory constant generation, sensitivity and uncertainty (S/U) analysis, and uncertainty propagation analysis. It has some special features such as the anterior convergence diagnostics, real variance estima

Adjoint Sensitivity and Uncertainty Analyses in Monte Carlo Forward Calculations
Hyung Jin Shim, Chang Hyo Kim
SJR Q2Journal of Nuclear Science and TechnologyOA

The adjoint-weighted perturbation (AWP) method, in which the required adjoint flux is estimated in the course of Monte Carlo (MC) forward calculations, has recently been proposed as an alternative to the conventional MC perturbation techniques, such as the correlated sampling and differential operator sampling (DOS) methods. The equivalence of the first-order AWP method and first-order DOS method with the fission source perturbation taken into account is proven. An algorithm for the AWP calculat

Dynamic Monte Carlo transient analysis for the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development Nuclear Energy Agency (OECD/NEA) C5G7-TD benchmark

SJR Q2Nuclear Engineering and TechnologyOA

With ever-advancing computer technology, the Monte Carlo (MC) neutron transport calculation is expanding its application area to nuclear reactor transient analysis. Dynamic MC (DMC) neutron tracking for transient analysis requires efficient algorithms for delayed neutron generation, neutron population control, and initial condition modeling. In this paper, a new MC steady-state simulation method based on time-dependent MC neutron tracking is proposed for steady-state initial condition modeling;

Real Variance Estimation Using an Intercycle Fission Source Correlation for Monte Carlo Eigenvalue Calculations
Hyung Jin Shim, Chang Hyo Kim
SJR Q2Nuclear Science and Engineering

The sample variance of a tally in Monte Carlo eigenvalue calculations is biased because of an intercycle correlation between the fission source distributions (FSDs). How to estimate the variance bias or equivalently how to calculate the real variance has been an interesting subject of study. This paper proposes a new method to estimate the real variance based on an intercycle covariance of the FSDs that can be derived from the cycle-by-cycle stochastic error propagation model. The proposed metho

Stopping Criteria of Inactive Cycle Monte Carlo Calculations
Hyung Jin Shim, Chang Hyo Kim
SJR Q2Nuclear Science and Engineering

Two new stopping criteria designed to terminate automatically inactive cycle runs in Monte Carlo (MC) neutronics eigenvalue calculations are derived in terms of the covariance matrix of stochastic error components inherent in the stationary fission source distribution (FSD) from each stationary MC cycle run. A practical way to determine the covariance matrix using nonstationary FSD in the course of inactive cycle MC runs is presented. The effectiveness of the new stopping criteria including the

Development of Generalized Perturbation Theory Algorithms for Monte Carlo Eigenvalue Calculations
Sung Hoon Choi, Hyung Jin Shim, Chang Hyo Kim
SJR Q2Nuclear Science and Engineering

A generalized perturbation theory (GPT) formulation suited for the Monte Carlo (MC) eigenvalue calculations is newly developed to estimate sensitivities of a general MC tally to input data. In the new GPT formulation, the tally perturbation due to an input parameter change is expressed as a sum of the perturbed operator effect and the perturbed source effect requiring the generalized adjoint function weighting. It is shown that the new GPT formulation is equivalent to the conventional first-orde

Monte Carlo Alpha Iteration Algorithm for a Subcritical System Analysis
Hyung Jin Shim, Sang Hoon Jang, Soo Min Kang
SJR Q3Science and Technology of Nuclear InstallationsOA

The α - k iteration method which searches the fundamental mode alpha-eigenvalue via iterative updates of the fission source distribution has been successfully used for the Monte Carlo (MC) alpha-static calculations of supercritical systems. However, the α - k iteration method for the deep subcritical system analysis suffers from a gigantic number of neutron generations or a huge neutron weight, which leads to an abnormal termination of the MC calculations. In order to stably estimate the prompt

Monte Carlo burnup and its uncertainty propagation analyses for VERA depletion benchmarks by McCARD

For an efficient Monte Carlo (MC) burnup analysis, an accurate high-order depletion scheme to consider the nonlinear flux variation in a coarse burnup-step interval is crucial accompanied with an accurate depletion equation solver. In a Seoul National University MC code, McCARD, the high-order depletion schemes of the quadratic depletion method (QDM) and the linear extrapolation/quadratic interpolation (LEQI) method and a depletion equation solver by the Chebyshev rational approximation method (

Monte Carlo Few-Group Constant Generation for CANDU 6 Core Analysis
Seung Yeol Yoo, Hyung Jin Shim, Chang Hyo Kim
SJR Q3Science and Technology of Nuclear InstallationsOA

The current neutronics design methodology of CANDU-PHWRs based on the two-step calculations requires determining not only homogenized two-group constants for ordinary fuel bundle lattice cells by the WIMS-AECL lattice cell code but also incremental two-group constants arising from the penetration of control devices into the fuel bundle cells by a supercell analysis code like MULTICELL or DRAGON. As an alternative way to generate the two-group constants necessary for the CANDU-PHWR core analysis,

Real Variance Estimation by Grouping Histories in Monte Carlo Eigenvalue Calculations
Hyung Jin Shim, Sung Hoon Choi, Chang Hyo Kim
SJR Q2Nuclear Science and Engineering

It is well known that the sample variance of a tally mean in Monte Carlo (MC) eigenvalue calculations is biased because of the intercycle correlations of the fission source distribution (FSD). This paper proposes the history-based batch method as a new method that can eliminate the dependency between samples and thereby estimate the real variance of the mean of the MC tally directly from routine cycle-by-cycle MC eigenvalue calculations. The new method estimates the real variance of the MC tally

Advances for the time-dependent Monte Carlo neutron transport analysis in McCARD
Sang Hoon Jang, Hyung Jin Shim
SJR Q2Nuclear Engineering and TechnologyOA

For an accurate and efficient time-dependent Monte Carlo (TDMC) neutron transport analysis, several advanced methods are newly developed and implemented in the Seoul National University Monte Carlo code, McCARD. For an efficient control of the neutron population, a dynamic weight window method is devised to adjust the weight bounds of the implicit capture in the time bin-by-bin TDMC simulations. A moving geometry module is developed to model a continuous insertion or withdrawal of a control rod.

Uncertainty Propagation Analysis for PWR Burnup Pin-Cell Benchmark by Monte Carlo Code McCARD
Ho Jin Park, Hyung Jin Shim, Chang Hyo Kim
SJR Q3Science and Technology of Nuclear InstallationsOA

In the Monte Carlo (MC) burnup analyses, the uncertainty of a tally estimate at a burnup step may be induced from four sources: the statistical uncertainty caused by a finite number of simulations, the nuclear covariance data, uncertainties of number densities, and cross-correlations between the nuclear data and the number densities. In this paper, the uncertainties ofkinf</
