Professor Hyunwoo Kim's research lab focuses on natural language processing, with a strong emphasis on empathy, prosocial dialogue, and second language acquisition. The lab investigates how conversational agents can be designed to respond more empathetically and ethically by leveraging social norms, emotion cause detection, and implicit causality. A key direction involves developing large-scale, human-in-the-loop datasets—such as ProsocialDialog—to train models that promote prosocial behavior in dialogue systems. The lab also explores syntactic complexity and constructional diversity in second language writing, aiming to better understand and measure L2 proficiency through computational methods.
