研究室紹介

Professor I Seok Kim's research lab specializes in musculoskeletal and orthopedic imaging, with a focus on applying artificial intelligence and advanced medical imaging techniques to improve diagnostic accuracy and surgical outcomes. The lab investigates musculoskeletal disorders such as osteoporosis, arthritis, and hip fractures, integrating radiology reports and medical imaging data to enhance disease classification and treatment planning. A key research direction involves optimizing regional anesthesia techniques, particularly ultrasound-guided nerve blocks, to improve safety and efficacy in orthopedic surgery. The lab also conducts large-scale observational studies to compare the long-term effectiveness and safety of osteoporosis medications.

Classification of femur fracture in pelvic X-ray images using meta-learned deep neural network

SJR Q1Scientific ReportsOA

In the medical field, various studies using artificial intelligence (AI) techniques have been attempted. Numerous attempts have been made to diagnose and classify diseases using image data. However, different forms of fracture exist, and inaccurate results have been confirmed depending on condition at the time of imaging, which is problematic. To overcome this limitation, we present an encoder-decoder structured neural network that utilizes radiology reports as ancillary information at training.

Arthritis damages the cartilage within joints, resulting in degenerative changes, including loss of function and joint instability. Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a chronic inflammatory condition affecting the spine and bone-to-tendon attachment area within the sacroiliac joint leading to back pain and progressive spinal stiffness. In the final stages, AS causes hyperkyphosis-a condition closely tied to the human leukocyte antigen-B27 gene. Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic, systemic autoimmune

Minimum effective local anesthetic volume for surgical anesthesia by subparaneural, ultrasound-guided popliteal sciatic nerve block
Seunguk Bang, Dong Ju Kim, Jin Ho Bae, K. Chung, Yee-Suk Kim
SJR Q3MedicineOA

Because of its rapid onset time, recent years have seen an increase in the use of ultrasound (US)-guided popliteal sciatic nerve block (PSNB) via subparaneural injection for induction of surgical anesthesia. Moreover, in below-knee surgery, combined blocks, as opposed to sciatic nerve block alone, have become more common. These combined blocks often require a large volume of local anesthetic (LA), thus increasing the risk of local-anesthetic systemic toxicity (LAST). Thus, to decrease the risk o

Alendronate and raloxifene are among the most popular anti-osteoporosis medications. However, there is a lack of head-to-head comparative effectiveness studies comparing the two treatments. We conducted a retrospective large-scale multicenter study encompassing over 300 million patients across nine databases encoded in the Observational Medical Outcomes Partnership (OMOP) Common Data Model (CDM). The primary outcome was the incidence of osteoporotic hip fracture, while secondary outcomes were ve

SERs should be repaired using the tendon-to-bone repair method to reduce dislocation rate in elderly patients who undergo bipolar hemiarthroplasty using the postero-lateral approach due to femoral neck fracture. In addition, patients with smaller CE angle should be carefully monitored due to high incidence of dislocation.

Abstract Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical and radiographic outcomes of bipolar hemiarthroplasty with cementless stem for the unstable intertrochanteric fracture in octogenarians and to determine the influencing factors associated with subsidence of the stem. Methods: The study included the 143 hips of 139 patients (119 females, 20 males). Mean follow-up period was 3.8 (range: 2.2 to 9.0) years. The displaced lesser trochanteric fragment was reduced anatomically and f
