Professor Ik-Jun Yoon's research lab focuses on sustainable wastewater treatment technologies and advanced networking architectures. The lab investigates ozone-based sludge pretreatment to enhance biodegradability and achieve significant sludge reduction, while also exploring the integration of ozone-converted sludge as a carbon source for nutrient removal. In parallel, the lab conducts pioneering research on differentiated services (DiffServ) in computer networks, emphasizing traffic engineering, fairness in flow management, and throughput guarantees through innovative marking and control strategies. The lab’s work bridges environmental engineering and computer networking, addressing critical challenges in both resource sustainability and next-generation internet architectures.

Effects of ozone treatment on the biodegradability of sludge from municipal wastewater treatment plants

The effects of ozone pretreatment on the biodegradability of municipal wastewater sludge were determined. Three types of experiments were conducted: anaerobic digestion, aerobic biodegradation, and denitrification using ozone-treated sludge as a carbon source. For 5 days, ozonated sludge at 0.1 gO3/g-SS showed about 2-3 times greater biodegradation compared to the raw sludge in both aerobic and anaerobic conditions. The feasibility of ozone treatment of municipal sludge for sludge reduction and carbon source production has been investigated.
