Professor Ik-Tae Eom's research lab specializes in sustainable wastewater treatment and resource recovery, focusing on advanced anaerobic and microbial processes for industrial and municipal wastewater. The lab investigates innovative technologies such as microbial fuel cells (MFCs), upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) systems, and chemical/biological sludge pretreatment to enhance biodegradability and nutrient removal. Key research directions include optimizing organic loading rates, improving sludge solubilization using cation-binding agents and physical/chemical pretreatments, and integrating simultaneous phosphorus and nitrogen removal with biological processes.

Recalcitrant compounds like phenol found in coconut husk retting effluent cause the deterioration of water quality when discharged from retting ponds into other water sources. In the present study, an attempt has been made to treat dairy wastewater entirely via anaerobic treatment over a period of 215 days, using two-stage Hybrid Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket (HUASB) reactors, which offer the advantages associated both with fixed film and upflow sludge blanket treatments. Effect of Cation Binding Agents on Sludge Solubilization Potential of Bacteria

The aim of the present study is to increase sludge solubilization potential of bacteria by the addition of cation binding agents. During the study, three strains of bacteria B1, B2 and B3 were isolated from waste activated sludge acclimatized to a thermophilic condition (55°C). 우리나라 공공하수처리시설의 방류수 수질 관리체계 개선방안 고찰- 미국, 일본, 유럽의 공공하수처리시설 방류수 수질 관리제도를 중심으로 -

우리나라의 공공하수처리시설 방류수 수질기준을 마련하는데 있어 기준설정 근거를 명확히 하는것과 하수처리시설의 운영조사를 근거로 적정성 여부를 검토할 수 있는 종합적인 기준설정 체계를 마련할필요가 있다. 미국은 연방정부가 POTW에 대한 최소한의 항목과 기준의 가이드라인을 제시하며, 지방정부는 국가가이드라인과 동일하거나 주별 특성을 반영하여 보다 엄격한 가이드라인을 제시하도록 하고 있다. 일본의경우 하수도법상 방류수 수질기준에서 하수처리시설 구조 기술상의 기준을 만족하여야 하고 방류수 수질기준과 공공수역으로의 배수기준을 동시에 적용하도록 하고 있으며 이에 대한 세부항목 및 기준은 지자체조례로 규정하고 있다. 유럽의 경우 하수처리시설 방류수 수질기준은 공공수역에 대한 부영양화의 민감성에 따라 수질기준 항목을 차등하여 적용하고, 수계로 배출되는 오염물질 부하량에 따라 수질기준을 차등하여 적용하고 있다. 우리나라도 공공하수처리시설 방류수 수질기준 설정 시 미국 국가오염물질배출삭감제도 또는 유

전해부상을 이용한 활성슬러지의 농축효율 향상

The performances of electroflotation (EF) on the thickening of activated sludge were investigated using laboratory scale batch flotation reactors. Four activated sludges including bulking sludges were tested. After 30minutes of EF operation, 57 - 84 % of sludge volume reduction could be achieved by EF, while only about 1.5 - 14% could be obtained by gravity thickening for the same period. To improve epothilones production and the ratioof epothilone B/A, carbon sources were investigated in flaskculture of Sorangium cellulosum. 하수의 재이용을 위한 GAC-MF 하이브리드 시스템

본 연구의 목적은 하수 2차 처리수의 재이용을 위해 입상활성탄(GAC)과 정밀여과막을 결합한 하이브리드 시스템에 관해 실제적인 정보를 얻고자 하는 것이다. 0.2 μm의 평판형 정밀여과막을 공기가 주입되는 조에 침지시켜 처리수는 낮은 압으로 간헐흡입을 통하여 여과된다. 공기 주입량이나 플럭스, 활성탄 주입량에 따른 최적의 운전조건을 연구한 결과 공기는 750 LPM으로 주입, 플럭스는 0.03 m/hr, GAC는 3,000 mg/L를 주입하였을 때 시스템이 최적화되었다. 막 단일 공정만으로는 탁도, SS는 100%, DOC는 25∼30%, COD가 20∼25% 제거되었다. 반면, 입상활성탄과 정밀여과막을 조합시킨 하이브리드 시스템에서는 제거율이 각각 탁도와 SS 100%, DOC 40∼45%, COD 50∼55%로 처리효율이 단독처리와 비교할 때 탁월함을 알 수 있었다.

업종별 산업폐수중 수질오염물질 배출 특성 및 개연성 평가 연구

업종별 수질오염물질 배출 목록은 산업폐수 배출시설을 인허가할 때, 해당 시설 또는 업종에서 관리해야 하는 배출가능한 수질오염물질을 정확히 검토하기 위함은 물론이고, 오염방지시설의 설계에도 필수적인 가장 기초적인 자료이다. 본연구에서는 우리나라 폐수배출시설 3개 업종을 대상으로 수질오염물질 배출목록을 작성하기 위하여 해당 사업장의 일반현황 및 처리시설 운영 등에 대한 기초자료 수집과 해당 사업장에서 배출하고 있는 산업폐수중 특정수질유해물질을 비롯한 수질오염물질에 대한 수질 분석을 수행하였다. 본 연구의 조사대상 업종별 수질오염물질 배출목록을 확정하기 위해서 정상적인 시설운영 과정에서 해당물질이 폐수중으로 실제 배출될 수 있는 개연성을 확인하였다. 이를 위해, 먼저 원폐수 및 최종배출수의 시료 분석에서 검출된 모든 수질오염물질을 평가대상으로 하고, 검출되지 않은 물질은 대상에서 제외한다. 다음으로 이들 평가대상 수질오염물질에 대하여 제조공정상에서 사용하는 각종 원료, 부원료, 불순물 등
