研究室紹介

Professor Il Suk Son's research lab specializes in cardiovascular pathophysiology, with a focus on the mechanisms underlying inflammatory and hypertensive heart diseases. The lab investigates molecular pathways involved in endothelial dysfunction, myocardial remodeling, and the impact of natural compounds like curcumin on vascular inflammation. It also explores clinical manifestations of rare cardiomyopathies, such as takotsubo and eosinophilic myocarditis, using advanced imaging and biomarker analysis. Additionally, the lab evaluates the efficacy and safety of combination antihypertensive therapies in real-world clinical settings.

Curcumin, a yellow pigment of turmeric in curry, is reported to interfere with nuclear factor (NF)-kappaB. This study was designed to investigate the underlying pathway of antiinflammation of curcumin on endothelial cells. Human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) were stimulated with 10 ng/mL tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha. Curcumin blocked the activation of NF-kappaB by TNF-alpha. Curcumin also reduced the intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS), monocyte adhesion, phosphorylation

Evolutionary Change Mimicking Apical Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy in a Patient with Takotsubo Cardiomyopathy

SJR Q3Echocardiography

In this report, we introduce a case of thickening of the involved left ventricular apical segment on echocardiography and deep T-wave inversions in precordial leads on electrocardiography transiently seen in the course of recovery from biventricular takotsubo cardiomyopathy, mimicking apical hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. This result suggests that the echocardiographic finding of transient myocardial edema can be identified by cardiac magnetic resonance imaging in takotsubo cardiomyopathy. Additio

Bloodletting-induced cardiomyopathy: Reversible cardiac hypertrophy in severe chronic anemia from long-term bloodletting with cupping
Il Suk Sohn, Eun‐Sun Jin, Seongsoo Jang, J CHO, Chang Seong Kim, Joonwoo Bae, James Moon, Sang‐Min Lee, M KIM
European Journal of Echocardiography

Cardiac hypertrophy in a patient with severe iron deficiency anaemia associated with long-term bloodletting using cupping, called 'puhang' in oriental medicine, is discussed using chest electrocardiographic and radiographic images. With iron supply, the patient showed remarkable improvement of cardiomegaly, which is a unique feature of chronic severe iron deficiency anaemia.

A Case of Acute Eosinophilic Myopericarditis Presenting with Cardiogenic Shock and Normal Peripheral Eosinophil Count
Il Suk Sohn, Jong-Chun Park, Jae Hun Chung, Kye Hun Kim, Youngkeun Ahn, Myung Ho Jeong, Jeong Gwan Cho
SJR Q2The Korean Journal of Internal MedicineOA

Eosinophilic myocarditis usually results from myocardial damage as a result of drugs or parasites, and is generally associated with increased peripheral eosinophil count. This form of myocarditis is difficult to diagnose clinically. A 25 year-old previously healthy woman was transferred from a local clinic because of hypotension and dyspnea with sudden cardiogenic shock after a three day history of gastrointestinal illness. Echocardiography revealed concentric left ventricular wall thickening wi

BACKGROUND: In this prospective, multicenter, non-comparative observational study, the effectiveness and safety of the triple single-pill combination (SPC) of olmesartan/amlodipine/hydrochlorothiazide (OM/AML/HCTZ) were evaluated in a real clinical practice setting in Korean patients with essential hypertension. METHODS: A total of 3752 patients were enrolled and followed for 12 months after administration of OM/AML/HCTZ. Primary endpoint was change from baseline to month 6 in the mean systolic

Modulation of Renin-Angiotensin System and Arterial Stiffness: Evidence from Clinical Trials
Il Suk Sohn, Chong‐Jin Kim
SJR Q3Current Hypertension Reviews

Arterial stiffness has been recognized as an independent risk factor for cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in hypertension. The activity of the renin-angiotensin system(RAS) is well-known to be involved in the control of blood pressure, and pathogenesis and evolution of several cardiovascular diseases. Although data relating the RAS activity to arterial stiffness are incomplete, there is growing evidence which shows that drugs which interfere with angiotensin II reduce arterial stiffness. T

BACKGROUND: Chronic diseases like hypertension need comprehensive lifetime management. This study assessed clinical and patient-reported outcomes and compared them by treatment patterns and adherence at 6 months among uncontrolled hypertensive patients in Korea. METHODS: This prospective, observational study was conducted at 16 major hospitals where uncontrolled hypertensive patients receiving anti-hypertension medications (systolic blood pressure ≥ 140 mmHg or diastolic blood pressure ≥ 90 mmHg

Tissue Doppler Image-Derived Myocardial Performance(Tei Index) as a Simple Assessment of Global Cardiac Function in Adults
Il Suk Sohn, Heung Sun Kang, Soo–Joong Kim, Chung Whee Choue, Kwon Sam Kim, Jung Sang Song, Jong Hoa Bae
SJR Q2Korean Circulation Journal

Background and Objectives:A new Doppler time index of myocardial performance (the Tei index) has been studied as a useful predictor of global cardiac function. It is defined as (a-b)/b, where a is the interval between the end and onset of the mitral inflow, and b is the ejection time of the left ventricular outflow. However, the Doppler time intervals are not measured on the same cardiac cycle. Subjects and Methods:We compared the tissue Doppler imaging (TDI)-derived Tei index, which can be meas
