Professor In-Hyang Kim's research lab specializes in environmental health and neurodevelopmental disorders, focusing on the impact of developmental exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals—such as bisphenols, phthalates, PFAS, and pyrethroids—on childhood behavior and cognition. The lab investigates critical windows of susceptibility during prenatal and early postnatal life, with an emphasis on ADHD and autistic traits. Using longitudinal birth cohort studies in South Korea, the lab integrates biomonitoring, epigenetic analysis (e.g., mtDNA copy number and gene methylation), and behavioral assessments to uncover biological mechanisms linking environmental exposures to neurodevelopmental outcomes.

The involvement of mitochondrial dysfunction in the pathophysiology of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) has been suggested in several reports. Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) copy number, as well as methylation of the D-loop region and peroxisome-proliferator-activated receptor γ co-activator-1α (PPARGC1A), are considered biomarkers for mitochondrial dysfunction.
