研究室紹介

Professor Jae Gun Kwak's research lab specializes in pediatric and congenital cardiac surgery, with a primary focus on the long-term outcomes and durability of bioprosthetic valves in the pulmonary position, particularly in patients with Tetralogy of Fallot. The lab investigates hemodynamic performance, imaging-based assessment (including cardiac MRI), and surgical strategies to optimize prosthesis selection based on patient age and valve size. Additional research directions include neuroprotection during complex cardiac procedures, such as unilateral cerebral perfusion in aortic arch reconstruction, and surgical management of infective endocarditis and arrhythmias in patients with complex congenital heart disease.

OBJECTIVES: In a previous study, we identified factors affecting the durability of bioprosthetic valves in the pulmonary position following total repair of Tetralogy of Fallot (TOF). In this study, we aimed to identify factors affecting the durability of the bioprosthetic valve with regard to patient age and implanted valve size in order to guide valve choice in adolescent patients. METHODS: We enrolled and analysed 108 cases of pulmonary valve replacement (PVR) with stented bioprosthetic valves

OBJECTIVES: The durability of bioprosthetic valves in the pulmonary position is suboptimal. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the early results of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) bicuspid pulmonary valve (PV) implantation and to better define the function of this valve by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). METHODS: Fifty-six patients who underwent PTFE bicuspid PV implantation between June 2009 and August 2011 were retrospectively analysed. The median age was 17.5 years and median valv

SJR Q1European Journal of Cardio-Thoracic SurgeryOA

OBJECTIVE: This study was conducted to demonstrate that unilateral brain regional perfusion during congenital aortic arch anomaly surgery is neurologically safe. METHODS: Fifteen patients who were diagnosed with congenital aortic arch anomaly between June 2004 and May 2006 were enrolled in this study. The mean age and body weight of the enrolled patients were 40.3+/-35.9 days and 3.7+/-1.0 kg, respectively. Underlying diseases included coarctation of the aorta (12) and an interrupted aortic arch

SJR Q1European Journal of Cardio-Thoracic SurgeryOA

OBJECTIVES: Clinically, tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) patients who underwent repair late (older than 2 years) appears to have worse outcomes after pulmonary valve replacement than patients who underwent repair early. We proceeded to review the clinical features of late-repaired TOF patients who required pulmonary valve replacement. METHODS: Fifty patients who underwent pulmonary valve replacement after TOF repair over the age of 2 years from 2000 to 2018 were retrospectively reviewed. Pre- and posto
