研究室紹介

Professor Jae-sung Jang's research lab focuses on neuropsychiatry and metabolic health, with a strong emphasis on the neurobiological and metabolic mechanisms underlying psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and major depressive disorder. The lab investigates neuroelectrical and autonomic nervous system markers in mood and psychotic disorders, while also exploring myokines—particularly irisin—as potential biomarkers for sarcopenia and muscle atrophy. A key research direction involves evaluating the therapeutic potential of novel pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions, including clozapine augmentation and exercise-mimetic models, to improve clinical outcomes in treatment-resistant psychiatric conditions. The lab integrates clinical neuroscience with translational physiology to bridge molecular mechanisms with patient-centered outcomes.

Aripiprazole Augmentation in Clozapine-Treated Patients With Refractory Schizophrenia
Jae Seung Chang, Yong Min Ahn, Hye Jean Park, Kyu Young Lee, Se Hyun Kim, Ung Gu Kang, Yong Sik Kim
SJR Q1The Journal of Clinical Psychiatry

Although aripiprazole augmentation of clozapine did not lead to a significant improvement of total symptom severity in schizophrenia, a favorable change in the negative symptom domain was observed.

SJR Q2Geriatrics and gerontology international/Geriatrics & gerontology internationalOA

AIM: Myokines are peptides released by the skeletal muscle, and have gained popularity as potential biomarkers for sarcopenia. Irisin is a recently identified myokine, but its role in pathological sarcopenia remains unclear. We investigated the validity and accuracy of circulating irisin levels as a potential biomarker for sarcopenia. METHODS: We evaluated the anthropometrics, body composition, sarcopenia-related parameters and serum irisin levels of 715 community-dwelling Koreans. Sarcopenia wa

Irisin prevents dexamethasone-induced atrophy in C2C12 myotubes
Jae Seung Chang, In Deok Kong
SJR Q1Pflügers Archiv - European Journal of PhysiologyOA

Irisin is a myokine secreted mainly from skeletal muscle that is known for having beneficial metabolic effects via enhancement of energy expenditure and insulin sensitivity. Studies show that irisin also acts as an autocrine/paracrine to promote myogenesis and muscle growth. However, the protective role of irisin against muscular wasting remains unclear. We confirmed that irisin secretion was upregulated by electrical pulse stimulation an in vitro exercise mimetic model. Next, we tested if irisi

SJR Q2Psychosomatic Medicine

Objective Alterations in neuroelectrical activities coincide with major depressive disorder (MDD). This study examines the pattern of cerebral activity and cardiac autonomic parameters of euthymic women with recurrent MDD. Methods Resting electroencephalograms and electrocardiograms were recorded from 20 women with MDD receiving escitalopram and 40 matched and healthy women. We computed frontal alpha asymmetry to evaluate the interhemispheric balance. Parameters of heart rate variability were ex

The Effects of Long-Term Clozapine Add-On Therapy on the Rehospitalization Rate and the Mood Polarity Patterns in Bipolar Disorders
Jae Seung Chang, Kyooseob Ha, Kyu Young Lee, Yong Sik Kim, Yong Min Ahn
SJR Q1The Journal of Clinical Psychiatry

Long-term clozapine add-on therapy was effective in reducing the number and duration of rehospitalizations of bipolar patients resistant to conventional treatment. A significant reduction was found in rehospitalizations associated with manic, depressive, and hypomanic episodes, whereas mixed episode-associated rehospitalizations did not show significant changes.

This study aimed to investigate the overall prescription pattern for patients with bipolar disorders in Korea and its relevance to the practice guidelines. Prescription records from all patients with bipolar I and II disorders who have been admitted or who started the outpatient treatment during the year of 2009 in 10 academic setting hospitals were reviewed. A total of 1447 patients with bipolar I and II disorders were included in this study. Longitudinal prescription patterns of inpatients and

Exercise intervention lowers aberrant serum WISP-1 levels with insulin resistance in breast cancer survivors: a randomized controlled trial
Jae Seung Chang, Tae Ho Kim, In Deok Kong
SJR Q1Scientific ReportsOA

Insulin resistance is associated with increased risk for and recurrence of breast cancer. Recently, Wnt1-inducible signaling pathway protein-1 (WISP-1) was reported to impair glucose metabolism and insulin sensitivity. In various cancer tissues, Wnt signaling is upregulated and induces further oncogenic and metastatic activity. However, the effects of exercise on serum levels of WISP-1 and its upstream β-catenin have not been studied in cancer patients. We investigated the effects of exercise tr

BACKGROUND: The diagnosis of dental implants and the periapical tissues using periapical radiographs is crucial. Recently, artificial intelligence has shown a rapid advancement in the field of radiographic imaging. PURPOSE: This study attempted to detect dental implants and peri-implant tissues by using a deep learning method known as object detection on the implant image of periapical radiographs. METHODS: After implant treatment, the periapical images were collected and data were processed by

AIM: The present cross-sectional study was carried out among community-dwelling Koreans to determine the validity of various muscle mass indices and to propose more clinically relevant diagnostic criteria. METHODS: This study measured the anthropometrics, body composition and physical capability of 415 older Koreans. Skeletal muscle indices were calculated by dividing appendicular lean mass by height or weight. Apart from this, we adjusted appendicular lean mass for body mass index, body surface
