Professor Jae-Woo Kwon's research lab specializes in respiratory medicine and environmental health, focusing on the impact of environmental factors—such as air pollutants, weather conditions, and indoor air quality—on respiratory diseases like asthma and chronic cough. The lab also investigates the complex relationships between obesity and airway hyperresponsiveness, as well as the development and validation of patient-reported outcome measures for chronic cough. Their work bridges clinical research with public health, emphasizing the reliability of standardized questionnaires and the real-world implications of environmental exposures on respiratory health.

15BACKGROUND: Recurrence of pancreatic cancer after primary pancreatectomy occurs in the vast majority of patients. The role of surgical treatment for recurrent pancreatic cancer is not well established. METHODS: Patients who underwent primary pancreatectomy with curative intent from 2000 to 2014 at a single large-volume centre were evaluated retrospectively. CT or PET was used to select patients with an isolated recurrence. The clinicopathological features and survival outcomes were compared acco
Early recurrence in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is a decisive factor in determining a patient's prognosis. We determined in our current study whether circulating tumour cells (CTCs) exist in the blood of PDAC patients and can be used as a predictor of recurrence patterns (i.e. time and site) after surgical resection. Between December 2017 and November 2018, the mononuclear cell layer was obtained from the peripheral blood of 36 patients diagnosed with PDAC. CTCs were then isolated us
BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to assess the perioperative and pathologic outcomes of robotic distal pancreatectomy compared with a laparoscopic approach. METHODS: A total of 121 robotic distal pancreatectomies and 992 laparoscopic distal pancreatectomies were retrospectively evaluated, comparing the demographic, perioperative and pathologic outcomes. After 1:2 propensity score matching (PSM) with 11 demographic variables, the factors were analysed again. RESULTS: Following PSM, 104 robot
Background: Few studies have compared perioperative and oncological outcomes between minimally invasive pancreatoduodenectomy (MIPD) and open pancreatoduodenectomy (OPD) for pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). Methods: A retrospective review of patients undergoing MIPD and OPD for PDAC from January 2011 to December 2017 was performed. Perioperative, oncological, and survival outcomes were analyzed before and after propensity score matching (PSM). Results: Data from 1048 patients were evalua
BACKGROUND: Fibrin sealants and topical glue have been studied to reduce the incidence of postoperative pancreatic fistulas (POPF) after pancreatico-enteric anastomosis, but a definitive innovation is still needed. We aim to evaluate the effectiveness of fibrin sealant patch applied to pancreatico-enteric anastomosis to reduce postoperative complications, including POPF. METHODS: This study was a single-center, prospective, randomized, phase IV trial involving three pancreaticobiliary surgeons.
Pancreatectomy for pancreatic cancer with arterial invasion is controversial and performed infrequently. As its indication evolves and neoadjuvant chemotherapy also evolves, it is meaningful to identify short- and long-term outcomes of pancreatectomy with arterial resection (AR). This study aimed to retrospectively analyze the clinical outcomes of pancreatectomy with AR for pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma.Patients with pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma treated with pancreatectomy with AR at our
BACKGROUND: Owing to concerns regarding adequate oncological outcomes and perioperative complications, minimally invasive distal pancreatectomy (MIDP) for pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) has limited generalizability. The aim of this study was to assess the perioperative and oncologic outcomes of MIDP compared with open distal pancreatectomy (ODP) for resectable PDAC after propensity score matching (PSM). METHODS: The patients who underwent MIDP and ODP for PDAC between January 2010 and D
OBJECT: The objectives are to investigate the incidence and risk factors associated with symptomatic marginal ulcer (sMU) and analyze their relationship with the use of prophylactic proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) after pancreaticoduodenectomy. METHODS: Clinical postoperative outcomes of 72 sMU and 1266 non-sMU were compared and analyzed. We performed a subanalysis of 72 patients with sMU diagnosed within (n = 18) and after 4 months (n = 54). The risk factors associated with sMU incidence were ana
Radical antegrade modular pancreatosplenectomy (RAMPS) is considered an effective procedure for left-sided pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). However, whether there are differences in perioperative outcomes, pathologies, or survival outcomes between anterior RAMPS (aRAMPS) and posterior RAMPS (pRAMPS) has not been reported previously. We retrospectively reviewed and compared the demographic, perioperative, histopathologic, and survival data of patients who underwent aRAMPS or pRAMPS for PD
BACKGROUND: The aim of this study is to investigate the perioperative composite textbook outcomes of pancreatic surgery after minimally invasive pancreatoduodenectomy (MIPD). MATERIALS AND METHODS: The cohort study was conducted across 10 institutions and included 1552 patients who underwent MIPD registered with the Korean Study Group on Minimally Invasive Pancreatic Surgery between May 2007 and April 2020. We analyzed perioperative textbook outcomes of pancreatic surgery after MIPD. Subgroup an
BACKGROUND: The association of resection margin status with recurrence and survival after pancreatectomy for pancreas ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) remains controversial. The aim of this study was to identify the effect of R1 resection on recurrence pattern and survival after distal pancreatectomy for left-sided PDAC. METHODS: Patients who underwent distal pancreatectomy for PDAC at two high-volume institutions between January 2010 and December 2017 were retrospectively reviewed. Perioperative ch
(1) Background: The aim of this study was to compare the survival benefit of radical antegrade modular pancreatosplenectomy (RAMPS) with conventional distal pancreatosplenectomy (cDPS) in left-sided pancreatic cancer. (2) Methods: A retrospective propensity score matching (PSM) analysis was conducted on 333 patients who underwent RAMPS or cDPS for left-sided pancreatic cancer at four tertiary cancer centers. The study assessed prognostic factors and compared survival and operative outcomes. (3)
