研究室紹介

Professor Jae Yeol No's research lab focuses on molecular mechanisms underlying chronic inflammatory and fibrotic diseases, with a particular emphasis on pulmonary disorders such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and allergic asthma. The lab investigates key signaling pathways involving matrix metalloproteinases (e.g., MMP-9), growth factor receptors (e.g., EphA3), and immune mediators (e.g., IL-13, periostin) in disease progression. Additionally, the lab explores therapeutic interventions, including statins and herbal extracts, to modulate inflammation and tissue remodeling. A growing interest in cancer-related signaling, especially in hepatocellular carcinoma, highlights the lab’s expanding work in oncology and molecular pathogenesis.

Matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) may play an important role in emphysematous change in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), one of the leading causes of mortality and morbidity worldwide. We previously reported that simvastatin, an inhibitor of HMG-CoA reductase, attenuates emphysematous change and MMP-9 induction in the lungs of rats exposed to cigarette smoke. However, it remained uncertain how cigarette smoke induced MMP-9 and how simvastatin inhibited cigarette smoke-induced MMP-9

DA-9601, Artemisia Asiatica Herbal Extract, Ameliorates Airway Inflammation of Allergic Asthma in Mice
김지영, 김대용, 이윤송, 이봉기, 이경훈, 노재열

We previously reported that DA-9601, ethanol herbal extract of Artemisia asiatica, inhibited histamine and leukotriene releases in guinea pig lung mast cells activated with specific antigen/antibody reaction. This study aimed to evaluate the inhibitory effect of DA- 9601 on the OVA-induced airway inflammation in allergic asthma mouse model. BALB/c mice were sensitized and challenged with OVA. DA-9601 was administered orally 1 h before every local OVA-challenge. OVA-specific serum IgE was measure

EphA3 is a component of the Eph/ephrin tyrosine kinase system, which participates in vasculature development. This receptor/ligand system is associated with various signaling pathways related to cell growth and viability, cytoskeletal organization, cell migration, and anti-apoptosis. Accumulated evidence suggests that aberrant regulation of EphA3 and its genetic alterations are implicated in the development and progression of various cancers. However, despite a high incidence of EphA3 over-expre

Periostin and Interleukin-13 Are Independently Related to Chronic Spontaneous Urticaria
배유인, Kenji Izuhara, Soichiro Ohta, Junya Ono, 홍관의, 노재열, 박경훈, 최정희

Chronic spontaneous urticaria (CSU) is a complex idiopathic disease of the skin with various cellular infiltrations. Although mast cells are key effector cells in the pathogenesis of CSU, CD4+ T helper 2 cells also have particular roles in the development and maintenance of CSU. Periostin is known as a downstream molecule of interleukin (IL)-4 and IL-13, key cytokines of type 2 immune responses. In this study, we examined periostin and IL-13 levels in the sera of patients with CSU (n=84) and hea

Journal of Urologic OncologyOA

Purpose: This study investigated the effects of preoperative renal artery embolization (PRAE) before radical nephrectomy (RN) for advanced nonmetastatic renal cell carcinoma (RCC) on perioperative and oncologic outcomes.Materials and Methods: We analyzed 820 patients who had undergone RN for advanced nonmetastatic RCC (cT3-4/N0-1) between June 2003 and May 2022. Propensity score matching (PSM) at a 1:2 ratio was performed using the nearest-neighbor method, matching 121 PRAE patients to 242 contr

Hwang Chan Go (HCG), a mixture of extracts of Allium cepa (onion), Allium sativum (garlic) or Zizania latifolia (wild rice) was shown to have anti-allergic activities but its mechanism of action has not been elucidated yet. Thus, HCG was examined for its effects on the allergic responses in B57bl/6 mice with asthma induced with ovalbumin (OVA). HCG, when administered to the OVA-induced allergic mice, was found to reduce levels of OVA-specific IgE, infiltration of inflammatory cells including mas

20(S)-Protopanaxadiol 및 20(S)-Protopanaxatriol이 활성화된 비만세포로부터의 염증 매개체 유리에 미치는 영향
노재열, 최광태, 한용남, 이창호

Ginseng saponins have various pharmacological effects on the immune system. 20(S)-protopanaxadiol (PPD) and 20(S)-protopanaxatriol (PPT) are the species of ginseng saponin metabolites that are formed by human intestinal bacteria and detected in circulation. The effects of PPD and PPT on the inflammatory mediator release from the activated mast cells were tested. Histamine release was evaluated in activated guinea pig lung mast cells, and the secretion of interleukin- 4 (IL-4), interleukin-8 (IL-
