Professor Jaeseung Shin's research lab specializes in thoracic surgery and thoracic oncology, with a focus on minimally invasive surgical techniques such as video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) and innovative approaches for treating thoracic diseases. The lab investigates rare thoracic tumors, including giant cell tumors of the rib, extramedullary plasmacytomas, and lymphomatoid granulomatosis, emphasizing diagnostic challenges and novel therapeutic strategies. Additionally, the lab explores molecular mechanisms underlying gene regulation in cancer, particularly retinoic acid response in HOXA-7, linking basic science to clinical applications. Their work bridges clinical surgery, oncology, and molecular biology to improve patient outcomes in complex thoracic conditions.

We report a case of giant cell tumor originating from the anterior arc of the rib. The tumor and the surrounding chest wall were completely resected, and the chest wall defect was covered with Marlex mesh. Giant cell tumor of the bone usually originates from the epiphysis of long bones. Even when the tumor occur in ribs, it usually occur in the posterior aspect. However, giant cell tumor should be included in the differential diagnosis of a tumor originating from the anterior arc of the ribs.

A 44-year-old man with congenital aortic coarctation experienced acute dissection that crossed the coarctation and extended to both iliac arteries. The primary entry of the dissection was proximal to the coarctation segment, just below the origin of the left subclavian artery. Surgical procedures involved resection of the diseased segment including the coarctation, and graft interposition.
