研究室紹介

Professor Je-Ho Mun's research lab specializes in dermatological diagnostics and therapeutics, with a strong focus on dermoscopy, nail disorders, and the clinical application of pharmacological agents in skin diseases. The lab investigates the dermoscopic features of pigmented and non-pigmented nail and skin lesions, aiming to improve early diagnosis of conditions such as subungual melanoma and melanoma of the skin. Additionally, the lab explores the repurposing of existing drugs—like simvastatin and oral zinc sulfate—for treating fibrotic and viral skin conditions, including keloids and viral warts.

Simvastatin, a 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme-A reductase inhibitor, is used to reduce cholesterol levels. Accumulating evidence has revealed the immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory effects of simvastatin that prevent cardiovascular diseases. In addition, the beneficial effects of statins on fibrosis of various organs have been reported. However, the functional effect of statins on dermal fibrosis of keloids has not yet been explored. The objective of this study was to determine whether

Diagnosis of Onychomycosis: From Conventional Techniques and Dermoscopy to Artificial Intelligence
Sophie Soyeon Lim, Jungyoon Ohn, Je‐Ho Mun
SJR Q1Frontiers in MedicineOA

Onychomycosis is a common fungal nail infection. Accurate diagnosis is critical as onychomycosis is transmissible between humans and impacts patients' quality of life. Combining clinical examination with mycological testing ensures accurate diagnosis. Conventional diagnostic techniques, including potassium hydroxide testing, fungal culture and histopathology of nail clippings, detect fungal species within nails. New diagnostic tools have been developed recently which either improve detection of

Dermoscopy of subungual haemorrhage: its usefulness in differential diagnosis from nail-unit melanoma

BACKGROUND: Subungual haemorrhages are characterized by well-circumscribed dots or blotches with a red to red-black pigmentation, but some cases can be difficult to distinguish from subungual melanoma by the naked eye alone. Dermoscopy has proven to be a useful, noninvasive tool in the diagnosis of pigmented lesions in the nail; however, few dermoscopic studies of subungual haemorrhages have been reported. OBJECTIVES: To investigate characteristic dermoscopic patterns of subungual haemorrhages,

Oral zinc sulfate treatment for viral warts: An open-label study

SJR Q1The Journal of Dermatology

Viral warts, which are caused by the human papilloma virus, are a common problem in dermatology. Various modalities have been used to treat warts, but none are uniformly effective or directly antiviral. Recent studies show that oral zinc sulfate could be effective in the treatment of viral warts. Thirty-one patients with multiple, non-genital viral warts were recruited in this open-label clinical study. The patients were treated with oral zinc sulfate (10 mg/kg to a maximum dose of 600 mg/day) f

SJR Q1Journal of the European Academy of Dermatology and VenereologyOA

BACKGROUND: Previously, dermoscopic features of Bowen's disease (BD) were extensively investigated in two studies, but there were some discrepancies. The dispute necessitated a further study concerning the dermoscopic features of BD. OBJECTIVE: To describe the dermoscopic features of BD in Asians and to assess dermoscopy as a post-treatment monitoring tool of BD. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Dermoscopic examinations of histopathologically diagnosed 26 BD lesions were performed to evaluate for the pres

Nail melanoma (NM) is an important differential diagnosis in patients with longitudinal melanonychia. However, diagnosis is often challenging as it is difficult to differentiate from other pigmented nail disorders. The main challenge for diagnosis is obtaining adequate nail matrix biopsy specimens for histopathological assessment. Furthermore, the histopathological changes in the early stages of NM are subtle and contribute to a delay in diagnosis and care. Therefore, the integration of clinical
