Professor Jeong-Hwa Ryu's research lab focuses on the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying chronic kidney disease (CKD), with a particular emphasis on endothelial dysfunction, uric acid metabolism, and vascular injury. The lab investigates key molecular pathways such as endothelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EndoMT), glycocalyx shedding, and the role of inflammatory and metabolic mediators like uric acid, indoxyl sulfate, and APOL1 variants in kidney and vascular damage. Their work also explores the impact of dialysis, blood pressure variability, and mineral metabolism (e.g., magnesium) on endothelial and cardiovascular outcomes in CKD and end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients. The lab integrates in vitro cell culture models, animal models of renal disease, and clinical studies to identify novel therapeutic targets and biomarkers for CKD progression and cardiovascular complications.
