Professor Jeong-Kuk Seo's research lab specializes in vascular pharmacology and anesthesiology, focusing on the protective mechanisms of various drugs against oxidative stress in the endothelasm. The lab investigates how medications such as captopril, enalapril, lidocaine, procaine, remifentanil, ketorolac, and diclofenac preserve endothelial function by scavenging reactive oxygen species (ROS), particularly superoxide anions and hydrogen peroxide. A key research direction involves evaluating neuromuscular blocking agents like mivacurium and rocuronium under conditions of prolonged immobilization, such as in plaster casts, to understand altered drug responses. The lab also examines the effects of corticosteroids like methylprednisolone and hydrocortisone on endothelial reactivity during ischemia-reperfusion injury.

15Both captopril and enalapril protect endothelium against ROS in a dose-dependent fashion in isolated rabbit abdominal aortas. This protective effect is related to superoxide anion scavenging.
These findings suggest that lidocaine and procaine dose-dependently preserve endothelium-dependent vasorelaxation against ROS attack, potentially via hydrogen peroxide scavenging.

Background: Invasive central venous catheterization is necessary in critically ill patients for hemodynamic monitoring and for administration of hypertonic fluids, drugs, and parenteral nutrition. Common access sites are the internal jugular veins, subclavian veins, and femoral veins.
