研究室紹介
Professor Jeong-Pyo Lee's research lab specializes in plasma physics and materials science, with a focus on fusion energy research and advanced thin film deposition. The lab investigates turbulent momentum transport, intrinsic rotation, and stability in tokamak plasmas, particularly through kinetic and magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) modeling. It also explores surface engineering techniques such as atomic layer deposition (ALD) on functionalized substrates to control film growth and interfacial properties. These interdisciplinary efforts aim to enhance plasma confinement and material performance for fusion energy applications.

15Abstract Mixed self‐assembled monolayers (SAMs) with different ratios of –OH to –CH 3 groups were used to modify the surface free energies of the Si substrates from 64 to 29 mN m –1 . The TiO 2 thin films were grown on the mixed SAM‐coated Si substrates by atomic layer deposition (ALD) from titanium isopropoxide and water. A two‐dimensional growth mode is observed on the SAMs‐coated substrates possessing high surface free energies. As the surface free energy decreases, a three‐dimensional growth
Turbulent momentum redistribution determines the radial profile of rotation in a tokamak. The momentum transport driven by diamagnetic flow effects is an important piece of the radial momentum transport for sub-sonic rotation, which is often observed in experiments. In a non-rotating state, the diamagnetic flow and the E × B flow must cancel. The diamagnetic flow and the E × B flow have different effects on the turbulent momentum flux, and this difference in behavior induces intrinsic rotation.
The injection of lower hybrid waves for current drive into a tokamak affects the profile of intrinsic rotation. In this article, the momentum deposition by the lower hybrid wave on the electrons is studied. Due to the increase in the poloidal momentum of the wave as it propagates into the tokamak, the parallel momentum of the wave increases considerably. The change of the perpendicular momentum of the wave is such that the toroidal angular momentum of the wave is conserved. If the perpendicular
The ion toroidal rotation in a tokamak consists of an $E\times B$ flow due to the radial electric field and a diamagnetic flow due to the radial pressure gradient. The turbulent pinch of toroidal angular momentum due to the Coriolis force studied in previous work is only applicable to the $E\times B$ flow. In this Letter, the momentum pinch for the rotation generated by the radial pressure gradient is calculated and is compared with the Coriolis pinch. This distinction is important for subsonic
The axisymmetric ( n = 0) resistive wall mode instability is numerically investigated for the negative triangularity plasma shape, which has shown several benefits in terms of improved confinement time and fusion engineering. To evaluate the shape effects, we modified a MHD instability code AVSTAB (Axisymmetric Vertical STABility), which calculates the marginally controllable elongation in a simplified feedback capability parameter. The plasma characteristics (poloidal beta and internal inductan
The accumulation of tungsten impurities measured in a KSTAR experiment was analyzed theoretically using a drift-kinetic code, NEO, to determine the contribution of neoclassical transport. According to the NEO simulation results, there is a certain value of impurity toroidal rotation speed maximizing the neoclassical inward convection. The inward convection decreases or the outward convection increases as the rotation increases only beyond the speed value. The non-monotonic dependency of the neoc
In this study, a neural network model inspired by a one-dimensional convolution U-net is developed to automatically accelerate edge localized mode (ELM) detection from big diagnostic data of fusion devices and increase the detection accuracy regardless of the hyperparameter setting. This model recognizes the input signal patterns and overcomes the problems of existing detection algorithms, such as the prominence algorithm and those of differential methods with high sensitivity for the threshold
Abstract We investigate the impact of toroidal rotation on axisymmetric MHD equilibria analytically and numerically, with a focus on the change of the safety factor and magnetic shear induced by the flow. When the toroidal rotation is radially localized by an external momentum source, the pressure due to the flow can change the magnetic configuration and the safety factor significantly, even for subsonic flows. Specifically, when the radial profile of the safety factor is not conserved throughou
The quasilinear diffusion coefficient assuming a constant magnetic field along the electron orbit is widely used to describe electron Landau damping of waves in a tokamak where the magnitude of the magnetic field varies on a flux surface. To understand the impact of violating the constant magnetic field assumption, we introduce the effect of a broad-bandwidth wave spectrum which has been used in the past to validate quasilinear theory for the fast decorrelation process between resonances. By the
In this paper, a similarity relation between RF wave systems in tokamaks is found theoretically by investigating scaling conditions of plasma density and temperature, tokamak size and background magnetic fields, and RF wave frequency and power. The scaling conditions simultaneously satisfy Maxwell's equations, the Grad-Shafranov equation, and the Fokker-Planck equation. The consistency of the scaling with transport equations is examined by several empirical and theoretical scalings for confineme
Thesis (Ph. D.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Department of Nuclear Science and Engineering, 2013.
To predict the performances of ion-cyclotron resonance heating in ITER based on the existing JET experimental results, it is important to know the impact of the deviations from the exact similarity relations between these two tokamaks. For this aim, in this paper we identify three global scaling parameters depending on the main plasma/wave quantities, such as confining magnetic fields, major radius, plasma density and temperature, wave frequency, toroidal mode number, and absorbed wave power to
We present a new formulation for quasilinear velocity space diffusion for ICRF plasmas that considers two different aspects: (1) finite Larmor radius approximation and (2) includes the effect of toroidal geometry and constructs a positive definite form. In the first aspect, the Kennel-Engelmann (K-E) quasilinear diffusion coefficients are successfully approximated in a small Larmor radius limit and implemented for the numerical codes (TORIC-CQL3D). In the second aspect, the quasilinear diffusion
