Professor Jeong-Tak Seo's research lab focuses on cellular signaling mechanisms involving calcium ions and their roles in disease pathogenesis, particularly in neurodegeneration, periodontal inflammation, sebum regulation, and epithelial barrier function. The lab investigates how dysregulated calcium homeostasis contributes to cell death, inflammatory responses, and secretory processes in neuronal, epithelial, and exocrine cells. Key research directions include the molecular mechanisms of stress-induced cell death, the role of reactive oxygen species and pro-inflammatory cytokines in periodontitis, and the regulation of lipid and secretory granule release by neuropeptides and topical agents. The lab also explores translational applications in geriatric dentistry and skin biology, emphasizing calcium gradient modulation and tissue homeostasis.

Inhibition of Rho-associated coiled coil-containing kinase (ROCK) has been reported to promote differentiation of neuronal cells. Here, we examined the effect of Y-27632, a ROCK inhibitor, on the outgrowth of neurites in PC12 cells. Y-27632 caused a rapid induction of neurite outgrowth in PC12 cells in a time-dependent manner. In the present study, we investigated the effect ofstaurosporine on the formation of cellular processes in humangingival fibroblasts and rat astrocytes.
