研究室紹介

Professor Jeong-wan Choi's research lab specializes in gastrointestinal and liver diseases, with a strong focus on Helicobacter pylori infection, upper gastrointestinal bleeding, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), and the interplay between chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection and metabolic syndrome in relation to hepatocellular carcinoma and extrahepatic malignancies. The lab investigates novel treatment strategies for H. pylori, evaluates clinical scoring systems for upper GI bleeding, and explores the role of microbial and biochemical factors in bile duct stone recurrence. Their work integrates clinical gastroenterology with epidemiological and microbiological approaches to improve patient outcomes in digestive diseases.

SJR Q1Helicobacter

BACKGROUND: The standard triple Helicobacter pylori regimen now shows unacceptably low treatment success in Korea. Administration of the concomitant therapy for 10 days, which has a high cure rate, is recommended as an alternative first-line treatment in areas of high clarithromycin resistance including Korea. Recently, modified bismuth-containing quadruple therapy with amoxicillin (PAM-B therapy) showed excellent results, regardless of dual clarithromycin and metronidazole resistance. This stud

Foods Inducing Typical Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease Symptoms in Korea
Jung Wan Choe, Moon Kyung Joo, Hyo Jung Kim, Beom Jae Lee, Ji Hoon Kim, Jong Eun Yeon, Jong-Jae Park, Jae J. Kim, Kwan Soo Byun, Young‐Tae Bak
SJR Q1Journal of Neurogastroenterology and MotilityOA

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Several specific foods are known to precipitate gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) symptoms and GERD patients are usually advised to avoid such foods. However, foods consumed daily are quite variable according to regions, cultures, etc. This study was done to elucidate the food items which induce typical GERD symptoms in Korean patients. METHODS: One hundred and twenty-six Korean patients with weekly typical GERD symptoms were asked to mark all food items that induced typica

SJR Q2Journal of Korean Medical ScienceOA

COVID-19-infected patients with HBV infections showed worse clinical courses than non-HBV-infected COVID-19 patients. However, after adjustment, chronic HBV infection itself does not seem to affect the clinical outcomes in COVID-19 patients.

SJR Q1Gut and LiverOA

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Various clinical scoring systems, including the Glasgow-Blatchford score (GBS), Rockall risk score (RS), and AIMS65 score (AIMS65), have been validated to predict the clinical outcomes in patients with upper gastrointestinal bleeding (UGIB). We compared the performance of these three scoring systems in predicting clinical outcomes in patients with UGIB in Korea. METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated 286 patients with UGIB who visited emergency department. The primary outcome was

Influence of Metabolic Syndrome on Cancer Risk in HBV Carriers: A Nationwide Population Based Study Using the National Health Insurance Service Database
Jung Wan Choe, Jong Jin Hyun, Bongseong Kim, Kyungdo Han
SJR Q1Journal of Clinical MedicineOA

Purpose: Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection and metabolic syndrome (MS) are known independent risk factors for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and other extrahepatic organ malignancies. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether MS and HBV have synergistic effects on cancers and to examine whether increasing the number of MS components could lead to higher risk of cancer development. Materials and Methods: We evaluated data from 1,504,880 HBV-infected adults who underwent a regular HCC s

Analysis on Microbial Profiles & Components of Bile in Patients with Recurrent CBD Stones after Endoscopic CBD Stone Removal: A Preliminary Study
Jung Wan Choe, Jae Min Lee, Jong Jin Hyun, Hong Sik Lee
SJR Q1Journal of Clinical MedicineOA

BACKGROUND/AIM: Common bile duct (CBD) stone recurrence after endoscopic treatment is a major concern as a late complication. Biliary bacterial factors and biochemical factors determine the path of gallstone formation. The aim of this preliminary study was to investigate the microbial profile and components of bile in patients with and without recurrent CBD stones after endoscopic CBD stone removal. METHODS: Among patients who had undergone an initial endoscopic procedure for the removal of CBD

OBJECTIVES: We evaluated the value of carbohydrate antigen 19-9 (CA 19-9) as a pancreatic cancer (PC) screening tool in an asymptomatic new-onset diabetic patients. METHODS: Medical records of asymptomatic patients newly diagnosed with diabetes mellitus (DM) were reviewed retrospectively at our hospital from January 2004 to January 2013. RESULTS: In total, 2363 asymptomatic diabetic patients with CA 19-9 measurements were enrolled. Of them, 68 (2.9%) were diagnosed with PC. In the 1719 patients

SJR Q3Gastroenterology Research and PracticeOA

Background . Shape modification has been one of the methods adopted to improve stent patency but has not always translated into positive outcome. The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy of shape-modified partially covered self-expandable metal stent (SEMS) that has enlarged head versus uncovered SEMS for palliation of gastric outlet obstruction (GOO). Methods . A total of 48 patients underwent insertion of either enlarged-head SEMS (<mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/Math

SJR Q2Clinical EndoscopyOA

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Sedation has become a standard practice for patients undergoing gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopy. However, considering the serious cardiopulmonary adverse events associated with sedatives, it is important to identify patients at high risk. Machine learning can generate reasonable prediction for a wide range of medical conditions. This study aimed to evaluate the risk factors associated with sedation during GI endoscopy and develop a predictive model for hypoxia during endoscopy u

Approach to the Patients with Elevated CA 19-9
Jung Wan Choe
SJR Q3Korean Journal of GastroenterologyOA

With the widespread adoption of health check-ups, tumor markers are being used for screening healthy individuals without symptoms related to cancer. Although CA 19-9 is known to have diagnostic value when a patient presents with symptoms, the evidence for its clinical value as a cancer screening test in asymptomatic patients is still lacking. However, patients who experience an increase in CA 19-9 levels may feel anxious about the possibility of having cancer and may seek medical attention. If t
