Professor Jeong-won Jeon's research lab focuses on translational biomedical research, particularly in neuroprotection, cancer pathology, and gastrointestinal disorders. The lab investigates the therapeutic potential of natural compounds—such as berberine and PDRN—in treating conditions like stroke, acute liver injury, and colon cancer by targeting key cellular pathways including PI3K/Akt, apoptosis, and inflammation. A significant emphasis is placed on integrating artificial intelligence with medical imaging to improve diagnostic accuracy in colonoscopy and histopathology. The lab also explores the role of probiotics and herbal extracts in managing Helicobacter pylori infection, combining molecular biology with clinical trials.

Berberine exerted a neuroprotective effect against ischemic insult by inhibiting neuronal apoptosis via activation of the PI3K/Akt signaling pathway. The antiapoptotic effect of berberine was achieved through inhibition of reactive astrogliosis and microglia activation. Berberine may therefore serve as a therapeutic agent for stroke-induced neurourological problems.
