Professor Jeonghan Kang's research lab focuses on sociological and behavioral dynamics in social inequality, with a particular emphasis on immigration attitudes, social capital, and structural barriers to labor market inclusion. The lab investigates how identity cues, cultural consumption patterns, and social networks shape individual outcomes such as employment and income, especially among stigmatized or marginalized groups like people with disabilities. Using mixed-methods approaches—especially survey experiments, longitudinal panel data, and agent-based modeling—the lab explores mechanisms of social stratification, homophily in online interactions, and the limitations of econometric techniques in social science research.

Group cues and public opposition to immigration: evidence from a survey experiment in South Korea
Shang E. Ha, Soo Jin Cho, Jeong‐han Kang
SJR Q1Journal of Ethnic and Migration Studies

One view in the study of attitudes towards immigration is that public reactions depend on who the immigrants are. Using a survey experiment, we confirm that group cues matter: South Koreans are more likely to support liberal immigration policies, when immigrants are framed as North Korean defectors (coethnic group). When other groups cues—Korean Chinese (semi-coethnic group) or guest-workers from Indonesia (non-coethnic group)—are given, the level of support becomes significantly lower. Apparent

How Do Cultural Classes Emerge from Assimilation and Distinction? An Extension of the Cucker-Smale Flocking Model
Jeong‐han Kang, Seung‐Yeal Ha, Kyungkeun Kang, Eun-Hee Jeong
SJR Q1Journal of Mathematical Sociology

When cultural tastes are not neutral but hierarchically matched to social status, people assimilate themselves to higher status by consuming cultural goods while distinguishing themselves from lower status by developing new tastes. Extending the Cucker-Smale model for mutual influence among agents, we examine when and how many cultural classes emerge from continuous distributions of tastes and what conditions those classes satisfy, through the assimilation-distinction mechanism. We simulate the

The Usefulness and Uselessness of the Decomposition of Tobit Coefficients
Jeong‐han Kang
SJR Q1Sociological Methods & Research

McDonald and Moffitt's (1980) decomposition method for Tobit coefficients disaggregates the total changes in a censored outcome variable into the changes in the probability of attaining noncensored values and the changes in the noncensored values themselves. McDonald and Moffitt, however, did not highlight two limitations of this decomposition, and sociological applications of the Tobit decomposition that do not acknowledge these limitations have been misleading. First, the decomposition ratio o

Homophily in an Anonymous Online Community: Sociodemographic Versus Personality Traits
Jeong‐han Kang, Da Young Chung
SJR Q1Cyberpsychology Behavior and Social Networking

In what traits do people interact with others who are similar to them in completely anonymous online communication? Can those traits contribute to greater exchange of opinion and information across the sociodemographic boundaries that often limit interaction between social strata? To answer this question concerning online homophily, we combined survey data on 7,287 users (aged 18 and above) of a Korean online dating advice platform with their behavioral data from June 2015 to August 2015 and exp

The Effect of Microvascular Decompression for Hemifacial Spasm Caused by Vertebrobasilar Dolichoectasia
Jeong‐han Kang, Dong‐Wan Kang, Sang Sup Chung, Jin Woo Chang
SJR Q2Journal of Korean Neurosurgical SocietyOA

Our data shows that MVD may be a good treatment modality for HFS caused by VBD but care must be taken to avoid adverse effects from the procedure. It is important to detach the dolichoectatic artery from its surrounding structures sufficiently to allow it to be easily movable. In addition, attempts should be made to lessen the retraction of the cerebellum during release of the dolichoectatic artery.

Does having children matter? Associations between transitions in work-family role combinations and depressive symptoms among married women in Korea
Min‐Ah Lee, Jeong‐han Kang
SJR Q1SSM - Population HealthOA

Although having a variety of roles is generally beneficial for mental health, little is known about the relationships between work-family role combinations and depressive symptoms among married women in Korea, where child rearing is strongly considered a mother's responsibility. This study examines how the four types of work-family role combinations may be associated with depressive symptoms among married Korean women younger than 50 years old. Data were collected from 2012 through 2020 in five

Converting a digital minority into a digital beneficiary: Digital skills to improve the need for cognition among Korean older adults
Joohyun Oh, Jeong‐han Kang
SJR Q2Information Development

This study explores how digital technologies can benefit older adults’ cognitive health. The need for cognition (NFC) refers to an individual’s tendency to engage in and enjoy cognitive endeavors and is an explanatory variable for behavioral outcomes. To date, little scholarly literature has examined how NFC can be affected by our behavior; therefore, this study explored whether practicing digital skills can help to improve or maintain NFC. Utilizing age as an instrumental variable, we analyzed

Infiltrating Epidural Angiolipoma Involving Lumbar Spine
Jeong‐han Kang, Hyeong-Seok Lee, Dae-Won Jung, Dong-Jun Ha, Jae‐Yong Kwak, Ui-Cheol Kim
The Journal of the Korean Orthopaedic AssociationOA

We report on an unusual case with infiltrating extradural spinal angiolipoma. Most spinal angiolipomas involve the thoracic spine and infiltrating ones are also located mainly at the thoracic levels rather than lumbar lesion. In particular, there are few cases of lumbar extradural infiltrating type spinal angiolipoma. One case is that of a 52-year-old female with infiltrating extradural spinal angiolipoma involving lumbar 4 (L4) vertebra, who underwent a L4−5 laminectomy and surgical removal of

SJR Q1Social Policy and AdministrationOA

Abstract This study examines how citizens' attitudes toward government are affected by verifying or correcting their prior knowledge of governmental policy concerning the COVID‐19 pandemic. Using a survey experiment, we asked respondents about their knowledge of the stimulus check provided by local governments in South Korea. We then provided the correct answer to half of the respondents at random. For outcome variables, we measured satisfaction with the stimulus check, trust in the government,

Min‐Ah Lee, Cholkyun Shin, Jeong‐han Kang
SJR Q1Journal of Interpersonal Violence

This study investigated whether and how classroom-level bullies' friendship networks, which reflect the popularity of bullies, were associated with the self-esteem of middle school students in the classroom. We analyzed survey data from 2,444 students in 101 classrooms from 22 middle schools in Korea. Respondents reported their friends' and bullies' names from their classroom. For each student, we generated the number of close friends that a respondent reported (outdegree) and the number of clas
