Professor Jeonghee Shin's research lab specializes in thyroid imaging and diagnostic radiology, with a primary focus on advancing ultrasonography (US)-based diagnosis, risk stratification, and personalized management of thyroid nodules. The lab investigates the integration of artificial intelligence, particularly deep learning models like convolutional neural networks (CNNs), to improve the accuracy of thyroid nodule classification and reduce diagnostic variability. Research also emphasizes optimizing fine-needle aspiration (FNA) and molecular testing (e.g., BRAF(V600E) mutation analysis) in conjunction with US features to refine preoperative diagnosis and guide surgical decisions. The lab conducts multicenter validation studies to ensure clinical applicability and reliability of AI tools in real-world settings.

15The rate of detection of thyroid nodules and carcinomas has increased with the widespread use of ultrasonography (US), which is the mainstay for the detection and risk stratification of thyroid nodules as well as for providing guidance for their biopsy and nonsurgical treatment. The Korean Society of Thyroid Radiology (KSThR) published their first recommendations for the US-based diagnosis and management of thyroid nodules in 2011. These recommendations have been used as the standard guidelines
For lesions located in the surgical bed in patients after thyroidectomy, the distinction between recurrent thyroid cancer and nonrecurrent benign lesions cannot be made on the basis of the sonographic features. Fine-needle aspiration is helpful in determining the histologic nature of such lesions.
Noninvasive follicular thyroid neoplasm with papillary-like nuclear features lacks malignant US features and is better triaged using US-CNB than using US-FNA to facilitate the surgical management. US evaluation is pivotal in determining the next step of FVPTC management.
PTCs that did not meet malignant US criteria had better prognostic indicators than PTCs that met US criteria. Therefore, US features at the time of diagnosis can serve as a useful tool for predicting biological behavior in PTC.
The application of BRAF(V600E) mutation analysis in FNA specimens is more effective for thyroid nodules with malignant US features as compared with nodules without malignant US features. The use of the AS-PCR is more valuable as compared with the direct DNA sequencing to refine the diagnosis in a clinical setting.
Heated, humidified, high-flow nasal cannula (HHFNC) is frequently used as a noninvasive respiratory support for preterm infants with respiratory distress. But there are limited studies that compares HHFNC with nasal continuous positive airway pressure (nCPAP) only as the initial treatment of respiratory distress in preterm infants immediately after birth. The aim of this study is to assess the effectiveness and safety of HHFNC compared to nCPAP for the initial treatment of preterm infants with r
The purpose of this study was to evaluate and compare the diagnostic performances of the deep convolutional neural network (CNN) and expert radiologists for differentiating thyroid nodules on ultrasonography (US), and to validate the results in multicenter data sets. This multicenter retrospective study collected 15,375 US images of thyroid nodules for algorithm development (n = 13,560, Severance Hospital, SH training set), the internal test (n = 634, SH test set), and the external test (n = 781
PURPOSE: This study was designed to assess the role of sonography (US) in the differentiation of benign from malignant thyroid nodules with peripheral calcifications. METHODS: Sixty-four thyroid nodules with peripheral calcifications that were detected on US were included in the study. Nineteen nodules (30%) were benign, and 45 nodules (70%) were malignant. We retrospectively compared the US findings of the benign and malignant nodules, including interruption, thickening (>or=0.5 mm and over mor
Diffuse hypoechoic parenchyma with intervening echogenic septa on sonography under the impression of a primary thyroid lymphoma, particularly in the setting of a rapidly enlarging mass, should prompt core biopsy rather than fine-needle aspiration.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the usefulness of targeted ultrasound (US) in the identification of additional suspicious lesions found by magnetic resonance (MR) imaging in breast cancer patients and the changes in treatment based on the identification of the lesions by the use of targeted US. MATERIALS AND METHODS: One-hundred forty nine patients who underwent breast MR imaging for a preoperative evaluation of breast cancer between January 2002 and July 2004 were included in the study. We searched a
Rupture of benign thyroid tumors after RFA is very rare. We experienced 6 cases in 4 institutions. All patients presented with abrupt neck swelling and pain between 9 and 60 days after RFA. Imaging and clinical findings of the ruptured tumors were anterior subcapsular location, mixed composition, large size, and repeated ablations. Conservative treatment was sufficient in 3 cases, whereas surgical management was required in 3.
BACKGROUND: Follicular variants of papillary thyroid carcinoma (FVPTCs) have dichotomous ultrasonographic (US) features. We investigated the differences in the biologic behavior of FVPTC according to US features. METHODS: We reviewed the US findings, pathologic reports, and medical charts of 75 consecutive patients with FVPTC who underwent surgery at our institution from January 2006 to December 2008. FVPTCs were divided into PTC-like and follicular neoplasm (FN)-like based on US findings. PTC-l
