Professor Jeong-Soo Woo's research lab focuses on clinical and translational studies in surgical oncology, head and neck surgery, and nephrology, with a strong emphasis on improving diagnostic accuracy and therapeutic outcomes. Key research directions include the development of sensitive biomarker assays—such as radioimmunoassays for urinary albumin—prognostic scoring systems in oral cancer, and minimally invasive treatments for pediatric conditions like ranulas using OK-432 sclerotherapy. The lab also investigates post-surgical complications, particularly voice and shoulder dysfunction following thyroidectomy and neck dissection, aiming to enhance patient-reported outcomes and rehabilitation strategies.

15We describe a rapid, sensitive, and precise radioimmunoassay for urinary albumin (Ualb). Aliquots of diluted urine were incubated at room temperature for 1 h with 125I-labeled albumin and a rabbit antiserum monospecific for human albumin. Phase separation was effected by the double-antibody technique. The dose-response curve as linear in the range of 15.6-10000 ng, equivalent to 4 to 3000 mg/liter of urine. The limit of sensitivity was 16 ng of albumin. The coefficient of assay variation was 4.8
OBJECTIVE: We analyzed the changes in voice- and swallowing-related symptoms that occurred over time in patients who underwent thyroidectomy and identified any associated risk factors. METHODS: One hundred and three patients who underwent thyroidectomy were enrolled. RESULTS: The mean thyroidectomy voice-related questionnaire (TVQ) score before surgery was 12.41 ± 12.19; it significantly increased to 28.24 ± 18.01 ( P < .001) 1 month postoperatively, decreased to 24.02 ± 17.30 ( P = .014) and 20
OBJECTIVE: To assess the efficacy of treatment of a ranula in children by intralesional injection of OK-432. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective analysis of 13 cases. METHODS: Review of medical records of pediatric patients with ranula treated by OK-432 sclerotherapy from 2002 through 2005. RESULTS: Among 13 cases, 9 were completely regressed by injection therapy alone. Three cases were incompletely regressed. One case was cured by surgical excision. The follow-up duration was 6 to 46 (mean 24.3) months
We found that the prognostic score system based on these three values was significantly associated with disease-specific survival of oral cancer patients who received surgery, indicating that the prognostic scoring system was effective in indirectly predicting systemic inflammatory response.
Therapeutic monitoring of immunosuppressive therapy with cyclosporine is a critical requirement because of intra- and interpatient variability of drug absorption, narrow therapeutic window and drug induced nephrotoxicity. With trapezius muscle volume ratio, clinicians may be able to diagnose shoulder dysfunction after neck dissection. Further research on the subject is warranted. This suggests a novel strategy for assessing the degree of shoulder dysfunction.
