Professor Ji-Hyeon Choi's research lab focuses on the molecular mechanisms of cellular stress responses, particularly endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress, and its implications in inflammatory diseases, neurodegeneration, and metabolic disorders. The lab investigates the therapeutic potential of natural compounds and microbial-derived vesicles—such as *Lactobacillus paracasei*-derived extracellular vesicles and baicalein—in modulating ER stress and inflammation. Using in vitro cell models and in vivo animal models (e.g., colitis and obesity models), the lab explores cytoprotective and anti-inflammatory effects, with a strong emphasis on oxidative stress, mitochondrial function, and immune modulation. Additionally, the lab extends into translational and behavioral research, examining how voice characteristics in smart society contexts influence human perception and emotional response.

15Lactobacillus paracasei is a major probiotic and is well known for its anti-inflammatory properties. Thus, we investigated the effects of L. paracasei-derived extracellular vesicles (LpEVs) on LPS-induced inflammation in HT29 human colorectal cancer cells and dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis in C57BL/6 mice. ER stress inhibitors (salubrinal or 4-PBA) or CHOP siRNA were utilized to investigate the relationship between LpEV-induced endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress and the inhibitory e
Baicalein is one of the major flavonoids in Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi and possesses various effects, including cytoprotection and anti-inflammation. Because endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress has been implicated in neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and cerebral ischemia, we investigated the effects of baicalein on apoptotic death of HT22 mouse hippocampal neuronal cells induced by thapsigargin (TG) and brefeldin A (BFA), two representative ER stres
The epithelial cytokine response, associated with reactive oxygen species (ROS), is important in Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori)-induced inflammation. H. pylori induces the production of ROS, which may be involved in the activation of mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPK), janus kinase/signal transducers and activators of transcription (Jak/Stat), and oxidant-sensitive transcription factor, nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells (NF-κB), and thus, expression of interle
Obesity is a medical condition in which excess body fat has accumulated to a serious extent. It is a chronic disease that can lead to dyslipidemia, insulin resistance, and type 2 diabetes. In the present study, we investigated the anti-obesity effects of Sicyos angulatus (SA) extract on a high-fat diet (HFD)-induced C57BL/6J obese mice. The mice were divided into vehicle and three SA groups (25, 50, and 100 mg/kg body weight). The mice were fed a HFD with or without SA for 12 weeks. The o
Uterine fibroid, or leiomyoma, is a common benign neoplasm in women, but serious complications are rarely reported. We present the case of a 48-year-old woman with acute onset of abdominal pain. She was hemodynamically unstable, and computed tomography revealed abundant fluid collection in the peritoneal cavity, suggesting hemoperitoneum. During emergency exploratory laparotomy, the subserosal vein overlying a uterine fibroid was identified as the source of bleeding. Hemostasis was accomplished
Zn(O,S) thin films were successfully deposited by reactive sputtering using Ar and O2 gas mixtures at 473 K. X-ray diffraction patterns revealed that the well crystallized Zn(O,S) films were deposited with increasing oxygen concentration in O2/Ar, resulting in a shift of the Zn peak of 28.5° to a higher angle, closer to the ZnO peak of 34.4°. Zn(O,S) films were composed of grains agglomerated from small particles, which grew gradually with increasing oxygen concentration. The depth profiles and
Abstract Mouse models expressing human ACE2 for coronavirus disease 2019 have been frequently used to understand its pathogenesis and develop therapeutic strategies against SARS-CoV-2. Given that human TMPRSS2 supports viral entry, replication, and pathogenesis, we established a double-transgenic mouse model expressing both human ACE2 and TMPRSS2 for SARS-CoV-2 infection. Co-overexpression of both genes increased viral infectivity in vitro and in vivo. Notably, double-transgenic mice showed sign
