研究室紹介
Professor Ji Won Choi's research lab focuses on clinical and translational research in surgical recovery, perioperative medicine, and neurodegenerative disease mechanisms. The lab investigates enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocols, particularly the impact of early feeding and temperature management on postoperative outcomes in colorectal surgery. It also explores metabolic and lifestyle factors influencing midlife women’s health, including weight and waist circumference changes. Additionally, the lab is engaged in biochemical research on Alzheimer’s disease, developing reliable methods for synthesizing full-length amyloid-beta peptides to study their aggregation and neurotoxicity. These diverse yet interconnected areas reflect a strong emphasis on improving surgical outcomes and understanding age-related physiological and pathological processes.

15Recent articles have stressed early postoperative feeding and hospital discharge as major benefits of laparoscopic colon surgery. From March 1993 to December 1994, an early feeding protocol after open colon resection consisting of clear liquid diet on postoperative Day (POD) 2, then advancing to regular diet on POD 3, and discharging home as tolerated was applied to 41 patients (Group A). We reviewed the charts of 41 consecutive patients from January 1992 to February 1993 who were operated immed
During midlife years, women are at risk of increasing body weight and waist circumference. We evaluated changes in weight and waist circumference from enrollment to 2 years later and examined the influence of physical activity level on those changes among 232 women aged between 40 and 50. Weight increased significantly for the entire sample. Those who increased their physical activity from enrollment to 2 years later had the smallest increase in weight and had a slight decrease in waist circumfe
Salivary excretion under propofol/remifentanil anesthesia is greater than under sevoflurane anesthesia during laryngeal surgery.
Postoperative ileus (POI) is an important factor prolonging the length of hospital stay following colorectal surgery. We retrospectively explored whether there is a clinically relevant association between intraoperative hypothermia and POI in patients who underwent laparoscopic colorectal surgery for malignancy within the setting of an enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) program between April 2016 and January 2017 at our institution. In total, 637 patients were analyzed, of whom 122 (19.2%) d
BACKGROUND: It is widely accepted that cervical interlaminar steroid injection (CIESI) is more effective in treating radicular pain than axial neck pain, but without direct comparison. And the differences of effect after CIESI according to MRI findings are inconsistent. In this retrospective study, we evaluated the therapeutic response of CIESI according to pain sites, durations, MRI findings, and other predictive factors altogether, unlike previous studies, which evaluated them separately. Although NORA cases showed an equivalent perioperative mortality rate compared to ORA cases, there may be more room for improving patient safety when considering their favorable characteristics (healthier patients, less invasive and shorter procedures). OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to analyse demographic profiles and pre-injection stroboscopic findings for patients with unilateral vocal fold paralysis, to investigate possible predictive factors for voice outcomes of injection laryngoplasty. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty-nine unilateral vocal fold paralysis patients underwent vocal fold augmentation, using transcutaneous Artecoll (polymethyl methacrylate microspheres plus bovine collagen) injection into the paralysed vocal fold via the cricothyro
How tethered probes report dynamics of host polymers near the glass transition was investigated by changing the length of the flexible linkers and the number of tethering points via imaging rotational fluorescence correlation microscopy and compared with free probes of different sizes. The results show that tethering did not alter the temperature-dependence of polymer dynamics and the shape of the correlation decay reported by the probe; however, the rotation slowed down up to ≈1 decade when bot
Background: Despite expanding demands for non-operating room anesthesia (NORA) worldwide, studies in this field are scarce. We compared the overall characteristics and the nature of deaths occurring within 48 hours after surgery between NORA and operating room anesthesia (ORA) cases at a Korean tertiary hospital. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed the medical records of patients who underwent surgical procedures under anesthesia services in and outside the operating room from January 2013 to N
BACKGROUND: Shoulder surgery in the beach chair position frequently causes hypotensive bradycardic events (HBEs), which are potentially associated with an increased risk of cerebral hypoperfusion. Here, we aimed to investigate the incidence and characteristics of symptomatic HBEs that require pharmacological interventions, and to identify specific risk factors associated with symptomatic HBEs. METHODS: We retrospectively examined the records of all patients aged ≥ 18 years who underwent shoulder
