Professor Jihun Kim's research lab specializes in interventional radiology and thyroid disease management, with a primary focus on image-guided ablation therapies for thyroid nodules and cancers. The lab investigates radiofrequency ablation (RFA) as a safe and effective alternative to surgery, particularly for low-risk, small papillary thyroid carcinomas and recurrent disease. Research also extends to improving diagnostic accuracy in thyroid nodules through core needle biopsy and refining imaging techniques for neurological complications such as delayed encephalopathy after carbon monoxide poisoning. The lab emphasizes evidence-based clinical guidelines and prospective outcomes in minimally invasive thyroid interventions.

After patients have had one FNA of a thyroid nodule yielding inconclusive diagnostic results (nondiagnostic or AUS/FLUS), CNB is more useful than rFNA for reducing the frequency of inconclusive diagnostic results. CNB will improve the diagnostic performance for malignancy more than rFNA in thyroid nodules that on the first FNA had nondiagnostic or AUS/FLUS readings.

Background: Active surveillance (AS) is an alternative to thyroidectomy for the management of low-risk papillary thyroid microcarcinoma (PTMC). However, prospective AS data collected from diverse populations are needed. Methods: This multicenter prospective cohort study enrolled patients from three referral hospitals in Korea. As compared with 1.5T, 3T 1H MRS demonstrated 49-73% SNR increase in the cerebral metabolites and slightly superior spectral resolution only at a short TE, but little at an intermediate TE, in the brain tumors.
