Professor Ji-Hye Kwon's research lab specializes in perioperative medicine and critical care, with a focus on optimizing surgical outcomes through hemodynamic monitoring, transfusion medicine, and metabolic modulation. The lab investigates biomarkers such as vasoactive-inotropic score and high-sensitivity cardiac troponin to predict postoperative complications, particularly in cardiac and non-cardiac surgery. It also explores the impact of blood product management—especially leukoreduction and autotransfusion—on oncological outcomes in liver transplant patients. Additionally, the lab examines the role of gut-liver axis modulation using prebiotics and probiotics in mitigating hepatic steatosis and metabolic dysfunction in obesity-related liver disease.

15Increased vasoactive-inotropic score (VIS) is a reliable predictor of mortality and morbidity after cardiac surgery. Here, we retrospectively evaluated the association between VIS and adverse outcomes in adult patients after off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting (OPCAB). We included 2149 patients who underwent OPCAB. The maximal VIS was calculated for the initial 48 postoperative hours using standard formulae. The primary outcome was 1-year death. The composite adverse outcome was death, resu
BACKGROUND: Pre-operative anaemia is associated with adverse outcomes of noncardiac surgery, but its association with myocardial injury after noncardiac surgery (MINS) has not been fully investigated. OBJECTIVE: The association between pre-operative anaemia and MINS. DESIGN: A single-centre retrospective cohort study. SETTING: Tertiary care referral centre. PATIENTS: Patients with measured cardiac troponin (cTn) I levels after noncardiac surgery. INTERVENTIONS: Patients were separated according
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine whether autotransfusion of salvaged blood with single leukoreduction is associated with post-transplant tumor recurrence in patients with advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). BACKGROUND: Previous studies have consistently demonstrated the safety of autotransfusion of salvaged and leukoreduced blood during liver transplantation for HCC. However, the effects of this technique remained unknown for advanced HCC. METHODS: Of 349 patients who under
SCOPE: This study aims to determine the separate and combined effect of a prebiotic (catechin-rich wine grapeseed flour, GSF) and a probiotic (newly isolated kefir lactic acid bacteria, LAB) on hepatic steatosis of obese mice. METHODS AND RESULTS: High-fat (HF)-induced obese mice are fed a HF diet containing 6% microcrystalline cellulose (MCC, control), 10% GSF, orally administrated LAB, or a combination of GSF and LAB for 9 weeks. There is a significant reduction of body weight gain and liver w
The cardioprotective effects of volatile anesthetics versus total intravenous anesthesia (TIVA) are controversial, especially in patients undergoing non-cardiac surgery. Using current generation high-sensitivity cardiac troponin (hs-cTn), we aimed to evaluate the effect of anesthetics on the occurrence of myocardial injury after non-cardiac surgery (MINS). From February 2010 to December 2016, 3555 patients without preoperative hs-cTn elevation underwent non-cardiac surgery under general anesthes
BACKGROUND: Prestorage leukoreduction has the advantage over poststorage leukoreduction in reducing leukocyte-derived molecules in red blood cells (RBC) unit, which induce immunomodulation. Our institution newly introduced prestorage leukoreduction, instead of conventional poststorage leukoreduction, for liver transplant recipients since March 2012. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the risk of posttransplant hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) recurrence after the conversion of poststorage leukore

BACKGROUND: While evidence from preclinical and observational cohort studies have suggested potential disparities in tumour behaviour associated with the choice of intra-operative anaesthetics, clinical evidence of tumour recurrence and metastasis remains inconclusive. We aimed to compare the impact of intra-operative anaesthesia on oncologic outcomes following hepatectomy for hepatocellular carcinoma. METHODS: Adult patients scheduled for elective hepatectomy for hepatocellular carcinoma were a
Laparoscopic donor hepatectomy is being increasingly adopted in transplant programs due to its numerous advantages. However, the role of intrathecal morphine (ITM) in laparoscopic donor hepatectomy has not been thoroughly investigated. This study aimed to compare the analgesic effects and safety of ITM between laparoscopic and open donor hepatectomy. This retrospective study included 742 donors who underwent hepatectomy with ITM between April 2007 and June 2019. Among them, 168 and 574 donors un
Interactions between lactic acid bacteria (LAB) and dietary polyphenols are not fully understood. This study determined the prebiotic effects of grape seed flour (GSF, a byproduct of wine making) and their polyphenol extracts (GSE) on the growth of 10 strains of probiotic LAB recently isolated from the kefir and pathogenic Clostridium perfringens. Growth rate of the LAB, Leuconostoc mesenteroides DH 1608, was the highest among 10 strains of LAB when cultivated with GSF. GSE, containing an equiva
BACKGROUND: Myocardial injury after non-cardiac surgery (MINS) has recently been accepted as a predictor of mortality. However, sex differences in the incidence of MINS and survival thereafter are not fully understood. This study aimed to compare the incidence of MINS and mortality among male and female patients. METHODS: This single-center study was conducted using the database of a large tertiary referral hospital. Consecutive patients with cardiac troponin (cTn) detected within 30 days after
Many studies have reported that hypoalbuminemia could be associated with organ failure after liver transplantation. However, most of them focused on serum albumin levels measured at specific time points and not on the trend of serum albumin change. We investigated whether a cumulative postoperative change in serum albumin level up to postoperative day (POD) 5 is related to organ failure in patients who underwent living-donor liver transplantation (LDLT). Data of adult recipients who underwent LD
The narrowest portions of the pediatric larynx are the glottis and subglottic region. However, the pliable and paralyzed subglottic region, acting like a curtain, is no resistance when passing an endotracheal tube. Therefore, the 'functionally' portion of the pediatric upper airway, which may be the most vulnerable to damage during intubation, is the unyielding portion below the cricoid cartilage. We investigated the functionally-narrowest portion below the cricoid cartilage.Computed tomography
