研究室紹介

Professor Jin-Koo Yoon's research lab focuses on infectious disease epidemiology, particularly respiratory viral infections such as SARS-CoV-2, influenza, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), with an emphasis on viral dynamics, clinical burden, and public health impact. The lab also investigates antimicrobial resistance, especially carbapenem-resistant *Acinetobacter baumannii* pneumonia, and explores the role of respiratory microbiome in critical illness. Additionally, the lab examines environmental health challenges, including climate change impacts on urban stormwater and rainfall patterns. Their work integrates clinical virology, microbiome analysis, and environmental modeling to inform public health policy and healthcare strategies.

SJR Q2Journal of Korean Medical ScienceOA

Background: Patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) can unknowingly spread the virus to several people during the early subclinical period. Methods: We evaluated the viral dynamics in various body fluid specimens, such as nasopharyngeal swab, oropharyngeal swab, saliva, sputum, and urine specimens, of two patients with COVID-19 from hospital day 1 to 9. Additional samples of the saliva were taken at 1 hour, 2 hours, and 4 hours after using a chlorhexidine mouthwash. The severe acute re

Social Distancing against COVID-19: Implication for the Control of Influenza

SJR Q2Journal of Korean Medical ScienceOA

Social distancing has been adopted as one of basic protective measures against coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). During 2019-2020 season, influenza epidemic period was exceptionally short and epidemic peak was low in comparison with previous seasons in Korea. Influenza epidemic pattern was bimodal in 2016-2017 and 2018-2019 seasons, however, influenza viruses have rarely been circulating in spring, 2020 in Korea. Although multiple factors could affect the size of influenza epidemic, extensive

SJR Q1Scientific ReportsOA

The disease burden of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection in the adult population has not been well characterized compared to children. Investigation of the clinical characteristics and disease burden of adult RSV infection would help to establish public health policy and a future vaccine strategy. We retrospectively collected medical records of hospitalized adult patients who were diagnosed with RSV infection from January 2012 to December 2015 from three tertiary hospitals. Baseline cha

Analysis of effects of climate change on runoff in an urban drainage system: a case study from Seoul, Korea
Minyoung Jung, Hwihyun Kim, Kristine Joy B. Mallari, Gijung Pak, Jin Gu Yoon
SJR Q2Water Science & Technology

Both water quantity and quality are impacted by climate change. In addition, rapid urbanization has also brought an immeasurable loss of life and property resulting from floods. Hence, there is a need to predict changes in rainfall events to effectively design stormwater infrastructure to protect urban areas from disaster. This study develops a framework for predicting future short duration rainfall intensity and examining the effects of climate change on urban runoff in the Gunja Drainage Basin

Seroprevalence and disease burden of acute hepatitis A in adult population in South Korea
Jin Gu Yoon, Min Joo Choi, Jae Won Yoon, Ji Yun Noh, Joon Young Song, Hee Jin Cheong, Woo Joo Kim
SJR Q1PLoS ONEOA

The anti-HAV IgG seropositivity in Korean younger adult population was low while the incidence of acute hepatitis A was high, especially in the 20-39 aged. However, a substantial number of older adults were infected, and required more intensive procedures and incurred higher insurance-covered medical costs.

Campylobacter infection causes gastrointestinal symptoms such as abdominal pain or diarrhea. Occasionally, Campylobacter bacteremia affects immunocompromised patients; however, serious outcomes are known to be rare. Here, we present a case of a patient with Campylobacter bacteremia who had underlying liver cirrhosis. The patient had fever and diarrhea. These symptoms subsided after treatment with cefotaxime. Campylobacter jejuni was isolated in the blood culture after 10 days. In addition, previ

SJR Q3MedicineOA

Carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii (CRAB) pneumonia has been a serious problem in the intensive care unit (ICU). However, defined characteristics of respiratory microbiome in CRAB pneumonia are lacking nowadays. This study aimed to analyze respiratory microbiome of CRAB pneumonia compared to non-CRAB pneumonia and reveal the clinical significance of respiratory microbiome data in these patients. Patients diagnosed with severe pneumonia with mechanical ventilation were enrolled in the I

BACKGROUND: Our study aimed to determine the risk of herpes zoster reactivation and coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccination (mRNA vaccine [BNT162b2] and adenovirus-vectored vaccine [ChAdOx1 nCoV-19]). METHODS: This retrospective study analyzed herpes zoster cases diagnosed between 26 February 2021 and 30 June 2021 and registered in the National Health Insurance Service database. A matched case-control study with a 1:3 matching ratio and a propensity score matching (PSM) study with a 1:1

Initial LD is not associated with better clinical outcome or rapid pharmacological target attainment in critically ill patients with MRSA pneumonia. Further studies are warranted to provide better evidence for this widely recommended practice.

Seroprevalence and Disease Burden of Acute Hepatitis A in Adult Population in South Korea
Jin Gu Yoon, Hakjun Hyun, Jae-Won Yun, Min Ju Choi, Ji Yun Noh, Won Suk Choi, Joon Young Song, Hee Jin Cheong, Woo Joo Kim
SJR Q1Open Forum Infectious DiseasesOA

Background. Hepatitis A is a major cause of acute viral hepatitis. In adult, hepatitis A manifests more severe symptoms and complications than in childhood. Adult seroprevalence of hepatitis A is decreasing in developed countries including Korea, because of getting better general sanitation. Although hepatitis A vaccination had been approved in Korea more than 20 years ago, recent infection rate and seropositivity did not seem to be improved. In this study, we investigate anti-HAV IgG seropreval

SJR Q1Influenza and Other Respiratory VirusesOA

BACKGROUND: After pandemic, A(H1N1)pdm09 is generally known to be associated with younger adults' infection and greater severity than seasonal A(H3N2) but some inconsistences between recent studies exist. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to compare the epidemiology and clinical outcomes of A(H1N1)pdm09 and A(H3N2) to verify and consolidate about the knowledge of known differences of subtypes. METHODS: Data were retrospectively collected from the hospital-based influenza morbidity and mortality surveillance

•The cycle threshold (Ct) value of RT-PCR was not significantly reduced by remdesivir.•Infectious virus was not detected after the third dose of remdesivir despite dexamethasone treatment.•SARS-CoV-2 shedding significantly decreased after remdesivir treatment, regardless of the Ct value.•Rapid antigen test is a viable adjunctive tool that guides the decision to terminate the isolation. In a recent systemic literature review, Walsh et al. reported that viral load of severe acute respiratory syndr
