Professor Jin-Seok Lee's research lab focuses on population health and health policy, with a strong emphasis on chronic disease management, health system performance, and the social determinants of health. The lab investigates long-term outcomes of diabetes and cardiovascular disease, particularly through medication adherence and health insurance policies, while also exploring psychosocial factors in disease perception and health behavior. A key research direction involves comparative health system analysis, notably between Korea and Vietnam, to identify pathways toward universal health coverage. The lab also examines patient safety in medical procedures, such as colonoscopy, and the role of health literacy and information in shaping health outcomes.

SJR Q1Scientific ReportsOA

Abstract This study determined the effects of anti-diabetic medication adherence on the long-term all-cause mortality and hospitalization for cerebrovascular disease and myocardial infarction among newly diagnosed patients. The study used retrospective cohort from the National Health Insurance Service. Study participants were 65,076 newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes mellitus patients aged ≥40 years. Worry experienced during the 2015 Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) pandemic in Korea
Jun-Soo Ro, Jin-Seok Lee, Sungchan Kang, Hyemin Jung
SJR Q1PLoS ONEOA

Level of worry increased in cases having higher perceived susceptibility and greater trust in informal information, while initial stage of outbreak was closely associated with that at later stages. These findings suggest the importance of managing the level of worry by providing timely and accurate disease-related information during the initial stage of disease outbreak.

Moving toward Universal Coverage of Health Insurance in Vietnam: Barriers, Facilitating Factors, and Lessons from Korea
Ngan Do, Juhwan Oh, Jin-Seok Lee
SJR Q2Journal of Korean Medical ScienceOA

Vietnam has pursued universal health insurance coverage for two decades but has yet to fully achieve this goal. This paper investigates the barriers to achieve universal coverage and examines the validity of facilitating factors to shorten the transitional period in Vietnam. A comparative study of facilitating factors toward universal coverage of Vietnam and Korea reveals significant internal forces for Vietnam to further develop the National Health Insurance Program. An Adrenalectomy Mouse Model Reflecting Clinical Features for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
Jin-Seok Lee, Yoo-Jin Jeon, Samuel-Young Park, Chang‐Gue Son
SJR Q1BiomoleculesOA

Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) is one of the most intractable diseases and is characterized by severe central fatigue that impairs even daily activity. To date, the pathophysiological mechanisms are uncertain and no therapies exist. Therefore, a proper animal model reflecting the clinical features of CFS is urgently required. We compared two CFS animal models most commonly used, by injection with lipopolysaccharide (LPS from Escherichia coli O111:B4) or polyinosinic: polycytidylic acid (poly I:C

The direction of reform for health care delivery system
Jin-Seok Lee
SJR Q4Journal of Korean Medical AssociationOA

Rebuilding a health care delivery system is one of the most important tasks the Korean health system is facing. Health institutions need to each establish their own appropriate roles in rebuilding the system. Community clinics should act as institutions providing primary care services. Small/medium-sized hospitals should act as community general hospitals or shift their functions to specialized care hospitals. Large hospitals should treat inpatients with severe status and act as education and re
