Professor Jin Soo Kim's research lab specializes in environmental and chemical engineering, focusing on advanced technologies for gas and wastewater treatment. The lab investigates innovative methods for acid gas removal—particularly hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and carbon dioxide—from industrial gas streams using absorption, adsorption, membrane reactors, and novel hollow fiber membrane contactors. It also explores biological nitrogen removal using microbial processes, such as the application of *Chiarella vulgaris* for ammonia and ammonium ion degradation in municipal wastewater. The lab emphasizes sustainable, energy-efficient solutions for pollution control and resource recovery.

15Natural gas, refinery gas, and coal gas contain acid gases such as hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and carbon dioxide that must be removed from the gas stream due to the toxicity of H2S and to prevent corrosion to piping and production facility caused by the acid gases. In this article, current technologies for the acid gas removal are selected and reviewed. The review includes absorption, adsorption, conversion of H2S into elemental sulfur, and membrane reactor for H2S decomposition and desulfurization.
The capability of Chiarella vulgaristo remove nitrogen in the form of ammonia and/or ammonium ions from wastewater effluent in a local wastewater treatment plant (i.e., the Mill Creek Plant in Cincinnati, Ohio, U.S.A.) was studied.
