Professor Jiseob Yoon's research lab specializes in political philosophy, with a particular focus on ancient Greek political thought, especially Plato’s theory of the polis and the role of law in ideal governance. The lab explores the tension between philosophical expertise and legal institutions, examining how laws function as mediators of wisdom in both ideal and imperfect states. Current research directions include the normative status of law in Plato’s Republic, the epistemic role of legal institutions, and the conditions under which laws may be justifiably overruled by political wisdom. The lab also investigates the enduring relevance of classical political theory for contemporary democratic institutions and constitutional design.

1Unlike the view that there is no need for law in Plato's best city, or the view that law is a useful tool in the city, this article argues that law is a necessary tool not only in cities without genuine statesmen but also in the best city ruled by the statesmen.
