研究室紹介
Professor Jong Sung Kim's research lab specializes in marine ecology and environmental biology, focusing on the impacts of anthropogenic stressors—such as industrial pollution, nuclear thermal discharge, and invasive species—on marine benthic communities. The lab investigates the spatiotemporal dynamics of meiofauna and macrofauna, particularly nematodes, in coastal ecosystems, using integrative approaches combining taxonomy, functional traits, and environmental variables. Research spans diverse marine habitats, from subtidal flats to rocky shores, with comparative studies across regions like Korea, the UK, and Europe to understand biodiversity patterns and ecosystem resilience.

The present study investigated the spatiotemporal distributions of meiofauna and corresponding environmental variables in two different subtidal environments. The two habitats represent unique geographical localities; (1) Jinhae Bay for semi-enclosed industrial bay (under anthropogenic pressure) and (2) Samcheok coast for open sea area (rather in natural condition) in Korea. Biotic and abiotic data were seasonally collected from six monitoring stations in each area for 3 years (2013-16) at two s
<p>Canopy-forming algae are important habitat providers in coastal ecosystems. Several canopy-forming species have spread outside their native geographic range. We investigated the role that these invasive non-native algae play in providing habitat for meiofaunal species. Sargassum muticum is a native species in East Asia and has been a successful invasive species of North American and European coasts. The nematode assemblages living in intertidal S. muticum on the English Channel coast in
We investigated the spatial variability of macrofaunal and meiofaunal assemblages in intertidal flats on the southern coast of Korea. Abiotic and biotic samples were collected at five stations. The species richness, density, and composition of the assemblages differed significantly among stations. Nematoda and Annelida were the most dominant meiofaunal and macrofaunal taxa, respectively, although taxon dominance differed among stations. Distance-based linear models showed that sediment-related v
The effects of the thermal discharge from a coastal nuclear power plant on the spatial and seasonal variability of nematode assemblages were investigated in the Gori coastal waters of the southern East Sea. Taxonomic and functional approaches were taken to describe the assemblage structure and relate it to the abiotic environment based on a sampling scheme involving three stations and four seasons. The analysis of the nematode communities suggested that heated effluent influenced the assemblage
Abstract Cosmopolitan habitat-forming taxa of algae such as the genus Corallina provide an opportunity to compare patterns of biodiversity over wide geographic scales. Nematode assemblages inhabiting Corallina turves were compared between the south coasts of the British Isles and South Korea. A fully nested design was used with three regions in each country, two shores in each region and replicate samples taken from three patches on each shore to compare differences in the taxonomic and biologic
Background: Hydroxyethyl starch (HES) is used for intravascular volume expansion in cardiac surgery. Studies have produced conflicting data on the effects of intraoperative HES administration on postoperative bleeding. We evaluated the effects of intraoperative HES infusion, shortly after the termination of cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB), on hemostasis following a cardiac operation. Methods: According to a prospective, random sequence, 30 children undergoing cardiac surgery received one of the fo
Oysters have been considered as an important candidate for blue carbon due to their ability to store carbon through calcification. This study aims to compare the growth of major cultured oyster species for effective carbon sequestration and determine the impact of climate change on oyster growth. The results showed that suspended cultured Crassostrea angulata and Magallana gigas had high carbon sequestration potential efficiencies (CSE) of 2.98 and 2.89, while bottom cultured Ostrea edulis had t
This study investigated the influence of both natural and anthropogenic factors on meiofauna assemblages along the coasts of the Yellow Sea (YS) and Bohai Sea (BS). Over 300 abiotic and biotic samples were collected from 101 sites, categorized by land use (agricultural, industrial, municipal, no use), region (southern, central, northern China, and Korea), and habitat (fresh, brackish, saline). Meiofauna densities and assemblage structures varied significantly across all regions, habitats, and la
This study was conducted to investigate the spatiotemporal variability in subtidal meiofaunal assemblages off the southern coast of Korea at local and regional scales. Abiotic and biotic samples were collected by site (three sites at least 10 km apart) within region (three coastal regions at least 50 km apart) over 7 years (2015-2021). The density and taxon richness of meiofaunal assemblages differed significantly among sites, but not among regions or years. The meiofaunal assemblage composition
Endovascular aortic repair is a new alternative to conventional surgical repair of aortic pathology. It is a less invasive technique and gives less hemodynamic stress to the patients who may have concomitant systemic diseases, compared with open aortic reconstruction. We report 2 cases of patients with thoracic aortic diseases, who underwent endovascular stent graft placement under general anesthesia. We also include a review of the literature about anesthetic management of endovascular aortic r
