Professor Jong-won Lee's research lab focuses on geography education, with a central emphasis on spatial thinking, geospatial technologies, and inquiry-based learning. The lab investigates how Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and emerging technologies—such as open data, big data, and AI—enhance students' spatial reasoning and geographic understanding. It also develops and validates assessment tools, like the Spatial Thinking Ability Test (STAT), to measure and support spatial learning in educational settings. The lab’s work bridges curriculum development, teacher practices, and technological innovation in K–12 and higher education contexts.

15A spatial-skills test is used to examine the effect of GIS learning on the spatial thinking ability of college students. Eighty students at a large state university completed pre- and post- spatial-skills tests administered during the 2003 fall semester. Analysis of changes in the students' test scores revealed that GIS learning helped students think spatially. Abstract This article introduces the development and validation of the spatial thinking ability test (STAT). The STAT consists of sixteen multiple-choice questions of eight types. 본 연구의 목적은 중등학교 수준의 지리수업에서 효과적으로 활용가능한 ‘공간정보기술 활용 교수·학습모듈’을 개발하는 것이다. 공간정보기술 활용 교수·학습모듈은 공간정보기술에 대해서 배우는 것이 아니라 과제를 수행하거나 문제해결을 위한 수단으로 활용하며, 교사와 학생 모두 사용하기 쉽고, 모듈의 내용이 수업에서 배우는 내용과 밀접하게 관련 있도록 설계되었다. 개발된 교수·학습모듈은 구글어스, AEJEE, GPS, 지오웹 등 다양한 공간정보기술을 활용하여, 신재생에너지(풍력발전단지)의 입지선정, 실시간 지진데이터를 활용한 지진발생 지역 분석, GPS와 경위도 좌표를 활용한 보물찾기, 지리정보의 수집과 정보의 시각화를 통한 대형마트의 입지선정 등의 문제를 다루고 있다. 개발된 총 4개의 모듈은 확산과 평가를 위해 다양한 교사연수에 적용되었으며, 연수에 참여한 교사들(N=119)은 대체로 모듈이 이해가 쉽고, 학교에서 활용하기에 편리한 방식으로 개발되었으며, 수업시간에 배우는 내용과 관련 있

본 연구의 목적은 ‘도해력’의 의미 변화를 조사함으로써 도해력의 교육적 가치를 재확인하고, 이를 실현하기 위한 지리교육의 과제를 제안하는 것이다. 도해력은 문자나 숫자로 전달하기 어려운 공간정보를 효과적으로 의사소통할 수 있는 능력을 의미한다. 도해력의 개념은 비주얼리터러시의 개념과 유사한 부분이 많고, 많은 부분 문제해결 및 발견을 강조하는 시각화 개념으로 진화한 것으로 평가된다. 도해력 교육을 통한 문제해결 능력을 배양하기 위해 그래픽 자료의 해석뿐만 아니라 제시된 상황과 데이터에 맞는 그래픽을 제작할 수 있는 기회를 제공할 필요가 있다. GIS를 활용할 경우 공간데이터의 조작, 분석, 시각화가 용이한 만큼 학교교육에서 GIS 교육을 어떻게 도입할 것인가는 도해력 교육에서 중요한 과제가 된다.
