Professor Jongyong Han's research lab specializes in advanced ceramic materials, with a primary focus on the development and application of novel ceramic formulations using natural minerals such as garnet. The lab investigates the integration of garnet—particularly in powdered or sandy forms—into ceramic bodies to enhance coloration, texture, and physical properties in traditional and industrial ceramics. Research spans both oxidation and reduction firing processes, examining phase transformations, color development, and surface characteristics in garnet-doped clay bodies, with applications in architectural ceramics, industrial abrasives, and decorative ceramics. The lab also explores sustainable material utilization by repurposing mineral waste or abundant natural resources for high-performance ceramic products.

1본 연구의 목적은 산업용 연마재나 건축 자재, 여과재 등의 재료로 광범위하게 활용되고 있는 석류석에 대해 살펴본 후, 석류석을 첨가한 도자기 제작용 ‘석기질 점토’의 효용성에 대해 알아보는 데 있다. 여기서 석류석은 덩어리 상태가 아니라 석류석 모래 혹은 가루 상태를 실험 대상으로 한다. 석류석은 종류에 따라 다르지만 주로 이산화 규소, 산화 알루미늄, 삼산화 이철을 주성분으로 하며 미량의 마그네슘, 칼슘, 망가니즈 등이 포함된 규산염 광물이다. 석류석의 화학적 조성은 점토의 화학적 조성과 비슷한 유리 구성 성분과 알루미나 질 성분이 큰 비중을 차지하고 있어 도자기 제작용 점토에 활용할 수 있는 재료로 보았다. 실험에 사용한 석류석은 다량 함유된 삼산화 이철의 영향으로 주로 적색을 띠며, 소성 후 검은색에 가깝게 발현된다. 실험은 기본 점토에 석류석의 비율을 증량하며 배합하는 방식으로 했다. 소성을 마친 시편의 색도 및 물리적 성질 등을 살펴본 결과 독특한 색상 및 질감 변화를 확인
