Professor Joon-Sung Park's research lab specializes in advanced surgical oncology, with a primary focus on minimally invasive and robotic surgery for hepatobiliary and pancreatic diseases. The lab investigates innovative surgical techniques—such as robotic hepatectomy and laparoscopic resection—to improve outcomes in liver and pancreatic cancer. It also emphasizes postoperative nutritional management, particularly early enteral feeding, and explores molecular markers like p16 and p53 to better understand pancreatic cancer pathogenesis and improve diagnostic accuracy. The lab integrates clinical research with translational studies to enhance resectability and survival rates in gastrointestinal malignancies.

15Purpose: The surgical robotic system is superior to traditional laparoscopy in regards to 3-dimensional images and better instrumentations. Robotic surgery for hepatic resection has not yet been extensively reported. Patients and Methods: Between March and May 2007, we performed 3 robot-assisted left lateral sectionectomies of the liver. Case 1 had a hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), case 2 had colon cancer with liver metastasis, and case 3 had intrahepatic duct stones. Results: All patients had
At present, surgical treatment is the only curative option for gallbladder (GB) cancer. Manyefforts therefore have been made to improve resectability and the survival rate. However,GB cancer has a low incidence, and no randomized, controlled trials have been conductedto establish the optimal treatment modalities. The present guidelines include recentrecommendations based on current understanding and highlight controversial issues thatrequire further research. For T1a GB cancer, the optimal treat
The benefits of early enteral feeding (EEN) have been demonstrated in gastrointestinal surgery. But, the impact of EEN has not been elucidated yet. We assessed the postoperative nutritional status of patients who had undergone pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD) according to the postoperative nutritional method and compared the clinical outcomes of two methods. A prospective randomized trial was undertaken following PD. Patients were randomly divided into two groups; the EEN group received the postoper
Pancreatic cancer is a disease with poor prognosis mainly due to low resection rates and late diagnosis. To increase resectability and improve survival rates, a better understanding of pancreatic cancer pathogenesis and more effective screening techniques are required. New methods, such as genetic and molecular alterations, may suggest novel approaches for pancreatic cancer diagnosis and treatment. We immunohistochemically investigated 44 formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded specimens of pancreatic
Since laparoscopic liver resection was first introduced in 2001, Korean surgeons have chosen a laparoscopic procedure as one of the treatment options for benign or malignant liver disease. We distributed and analyzed a nationwide questionnaire to members of the Korean Laparoscopic Liver Surgery Study Group (KLLSG) in order to evaluate the current status of laparoscopic liver resection in Korea. Questionnaires were sent to 24 centers of KLLSG. The questionnaire consisted of operative procedure, h
Purpose: Accurate indications and the extent of surgery for branch duct intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm (IPMN) of the pancreas are still debatable. In particular, small tumor is located at the head portion of pancreas presents a dilemma. The purpose of this study is to compare the efficacy of enucleation (EN) with that of pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD) in patients with small (2 cm<size<3 cm) branch duct IPMN located at the head of pancreas or uncinate process. Materials and Methods: Among 1
Purpose: Liver resection with colorectal liver metastasis widely accepted and has been considered safe and effective therapeutic option. However, the role of liver resection in breast cancer with liver metastasis is still controversial. Therefore, we reviewed the outcome of liver resection in breast cancer patients with liver metastasesin a single hospital experiences. Materials and Methods: Between January 1991 and December 2006, 2176 patients underwent breast cancer surgery in Gangnam Severanc
The purpose of this study was to verify the validity of Mealworms as a hospital meal with increased nutrition density. We provided a meal for postoperative patients and conducted analysis of dietary intake and nutritional status of patients and assessment of acceptability of the meal. This study was carried out as a randomized control trial. Patients were supplied either a hospital meal using Mealworms (Experimental group) or a regular hospital meal (Control group). We investigated the administr
Purpose Metastatic biliary tract cancer (mBTC) has a dismal prognosis. In this study, an independent dataset of patients with mBTC was used to implement and validate a routine clinico-laboratory parameter-based scoring model for risk group identification. Materials and Methods From September 2006 to February 2015, 482 patients with mBTC were assigned randomly (ratio, 7:3) into investigational (n=340) and validation datasets (n=142). The continuous variables were dichotomized using a normal range
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to compare machine learning models for anomaly detection of mechanical facility equipment and suggest an anomaly detection system for mechanical facility equipment in subway stations. It helps to predict failures and plan the maintenance of facility. Ultimately it aims to improve the quality of facility equipment. Methods: The data collected from Daejeon Metropolitan Rapid Transit Corporation was used in this experiment. The experiment was performed using Py
Purpose: The aim of this study was to verify that laparoscopic resection for treating retroperitoneal benign neurilemmoma (NL) is expected to be favorable for complete resection of tumor with technical feasibility and safety. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 47 operations for retroperitoneal neurogenic tumor at Yonsei University College of Medicine, Severance Hospital and Gangnam Severance Hospital between January 2005 and September 2015. After excluding 21 patients, the remaining 26 were di
Purpose: We evaluated the safety, feasibility, and early treatment outcomes of intraoperative radiotherapy (IORT) using a lowenergyX-ray source. Materials and Methods: Patients with resectable pancreatic cancer were enrolled in this single-institution, prospective, singlearm, phase II trial. Patients underwent surgery and IORT with 10 Gy prescribed at a 5-mm depth from the tumor bed using a 50 kVX-ray source (Intrabeam, Carl Zeiss). Six cycles of adjuvant gemcitabine-based chemotherapy were admin
Purpose: This study investigated the effectiveness of meaning-centered psychotherapy (MCP), which is known to be a helpfulpsychotherapeutic intervention in distressing conditions, for patients with pancreatobiliary cancer. Materials and Methods: We recruited 37 patients with pancreatobiliary cancer from three university general hospitals and assessedtheir psychological characteristics. Patients who reported clinically significant emotional distress were recommended toundergo MCP. Patients who co
Purpose: This study aims to investigate the impact of two types of information quality, which are platform-oriented information quality and customer-oriented information quality, on customers’ decision-making processes in the Online to offline (O2O) platform environment. Grounded in the product brokering efficiency model, which encompasses screening cost, evaluation cost, and decision quality, a model framework was developed. Furthermore, this study explores how these decision-making processes a
