研究室紹介
Professor Joonhwan Lee's research lab focuses on intelligent systems and human-centered technology, with a strong emphasis on energy systems, affective computing, and personalized information systems. The lab investigates variable-speed engine generator systems integrated with supercapacitors to enhance power quality and reduce emissions in isolated power systems, while also exploring dynamic text interaction through kinetic typography to enrich emotional expression in digital communication. Additionally, the lab develops personalized and interactive news generation systems using algorithmic frameworks for real-time content adaptation, particularly in sports journalism. The research integrates human factors, machine learning, and real-time system design to create adaptive, efficient, and user-responsive technologies.

However, because of the sluggish dynamic behavior of the internal combustion engine, the power quality would be degraded during the sudden load power surge, where the power required by the load is not available by the engine because of the reduced engine speed. An isol
Text-based interpersonal communication tools such as instant messenger are widely used today. These tools often feature emoticons that people use to express emotion to some degree. However, emoticons still lack the ability to communicate the details of an emotional response, such as the speaker's tone of voice or intensity of emotion. In this paper, we hypothesize that kinetic typography - text that moves or changes over time - can address some of this problem by enhancing emotional qualities of
In-vehicle navigation has changed substantially in recent years, due to the advent of computer generated maps and directions. However, these maps are still problematic, due to a mismatch between the complexity of the maps and the attentional demands of driving. In response to this problem, we are developing the MOVE (Maps Optimized for Vehicular Environments) system. This system will provide situationally appropriate map information by presenting information that uses appropriate amounts of the
BACKGROUND: Emotional eating (EE) is one of the most significant symptoms of various eating disorders. It has been difficult to collect a large amount of behavioral data on EE; therefore, only partial studies of this symptom have been conducted. To provide adequate support for online social media users with symptoms of EE, we must understand their behavior patterns to design a sophisticated personalized support system (PSS). OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to analyze the behavior patterns of emotion
A variable speed engine generator set for an isolated power system is investigated to reduce fuel consumption and emission than conventional fixed speed engine generator. However, the power quality of the variable speed engine generator set would be degraded to the sudden load power surge, and the power required by the load would not be available because of the lowered operating speed condition and the sluggish dynamics of the engine in this variable speed engine generator system. A super-capaci
As the uses of conversational agents increase, the affective and social abilities of agents become important with their functional abilities. Agents that lack affective abilities could frustrate users during interaction. This study applied personality to implement the natural feedback of conversational agents referring to the concept of affective computing. Two types of feedback were used to express conversational agents’ personality: (1) visual feedback and (2) verbal cues. For visual feedback,
Algorithms are playing an increasingly important role in the production of news content as their computation capacity in manipulating large-scale data continues to grow. In this article, we present Personalized and Interactive News Generation System (PINGS), an algorithm-driven news generation system that is designed to provide personalized and interactive news for sports. We designed PINGS to generate baseball news based on the statistical importance of data and the direct manipulation of user
With the advancement of AI, even people without professional experience can create artworks using AI-based image generation systems like DALL-E 2. However, little is known about how users interact with these new AI algorithms, much less how AI-infused systems can be designed. We explore the user experience of these new technologies and their potential to foster creativity. A user study was carried out where 13 participants executed tasks of creating artworks using DALL-E 2 alongside in-depth int
BACKGROUND: Prolonged time of computer use increases the prevalence of ocular problems, including eye strain, tired eyes, irritation, redness, blurred vision, and double vision, which are collectively referred to as computer vision syndrome (CVS). Approximately 70% of computer users have vision-related problems. For these reasons, properly designed interventions for users with CVS are required. To design an effective screen intervention for preventing or improving CVS, we must understand the eff
This study compares the effectiveness of artificial intelligence (AI)-aided versus human-assisted fact-checking for different types of news, namely hard and soft news. To this end, an online experiment was carried out separately in Korea and the United States, employing a 2 (news type: hard news vs. soft news) × 2 (fact-checker: AI vs. human experts) between-group factorial design. Findings suggest that AI’s fact-checking, with its perceived objectivity and lack of bias, is potentially more effe
Recently drivers have greatly benefited from new vehicular technologies such as in-car navigation systems, but at the same time they can be easily distracted from those technologies. Consequently, creating displays that balance the communication of information with the attentional demand imposed on the driver is of increasing importance. A set of research has been conducted to minimize the driver’s attentional cost toward the navigational displays while driving. However, accurate evaluation meth
The use of an in-vehicle navigation system should enable drivers to minimize their attention to the display in order to drive safely. However, current navigational devices are not designed to consider the human cost and effects when the systems are used in the driving situation. In this paper, we present guidelines and recommendations to be used in the design of in-vehicle navigation system from the disciplines of human factors, cognitive science, human-computer interaction and information desig
