Professor Juhwan Woo's research lab specializes in translational oncology and molecular pathology, focusing on the biological mechanisms underlying cancer progression, therapeutic resistance, and prognostic biomarkers. Key research directions include the role of DNA repair and redox regulation proteins—such as APE1—in cancer treatment response, the impact of multifocality and tumor microenvironment features (e.g., biofilms) in thyroid and head and neck cancers, and the modulation of therapy sensitivity in HER2-positive breast cancer through agents like selenium. The lab integrates clinical data with molecular and cellular studies to identify novel therapeutic targets and improve patient outcomes.

15Among 115 patients in the study, 40 cases (34.8%) showed complete remission and 57 cases (49.6%) showed partial remission. As a result, overall improvement rates were 84.4%. Almost all objective and subjective parameters showed statistical improvement at the first and third month after PSI (p < 0.05). Jitter and all subjective parameters maintained statistical improvement until the sixth month. No severe complications, such as fold atrophy, were observed.
Human apurinic/apyrimidinic endonuclease 1 (APE1) is an essential protein for DNA base excision repair (BER) and redox regulation. The ability of cancer cells to recognize DNA damage and initiate DNA repair is an important mechanism for therapeutic resistance. Several recent studies have suggested that APE1 expression levels and/or subcellular dysregulation may be used to indicate the sensitivity of tumors to radiotherapy or chemotherapy. In this study, we assessed the prognostic significance of
The two groups were matched for age and sex. SEM revealed that biofilms were significantly more prevalent in the recurrent tonsillitis group than in the control group. Furthermore, the biofilms in the recurrent tonsillitis group were of significantly higher grade than those in the control group.
The incidence of thyroid cancer has dramatically increased over the last few decades, and up to 60% of patients have multifocal tumors. However, the prognostic impact of multifocality in patients with papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) remains unestablished and controversial. We evaluate whether multifocality can predict the recurrence of PTC. A total of 1249 patients who underwent total thyroidectomy for PTC at the Ewha Medical Center between March 2012 and December 2019 were reviewed. In this s
The response rate to treatment with trastuzumab (Tz), a recombinant humanized anti-HER2 monoclonal antibody, is only 12-34% despite demonstrated effectiveness on improving the survival of patients with HER2-positive breast cancers. Selenium has an antitumor effect against cancer cells and can play a cytoprotective role on normal cells. This study investigated the effect of selenium on HER2-positive breast cancer cells and the mechanism in relation to the response of the cells to Tz. HER2-positiv
BACKGROUND Metastasis to the stomach can be found as the first presentation of breast cancer, although it is very rare. The authors report an unusual case of metastasis to the stomach as the first presentation of breast cancer, which had a good prognosis. CASE REPORT A 51-year-old female underwent radical subtotal gastrectomy and chemotherapy because of gastric cancer with distant metastasis. At the time of diagnosis of gastric cancer, she had a negative result from routine mammography. One year
Sedation during ophthalmic local anesthesia helps to ensure comfort and cooperation during eye surgery. Sedation requirements of ophthalmic patients have changed with the popularization of newer surgical and anesthetic techniques. Many sedative agents are available to anesthesiologists including benzodiazepines, intravenous anesthetic induction agents, narcotic analgesics and a-adrenoreceptor agonists. However, there is no single ideal sedative agent, regime or protocol that can completely cater
Despite clinically negative SMLN in preoperative evaluation, SMLN metastasis can be predicted for patients with a PTC tumor size larger than 1 cm, pretracheal LN metastasis, multiple lateral metastasis, and revisional surgery.
Selenium is an essential microelement in animals including human. Selenium plays an important role in cellular functions such as deoxygenation and detoxification. Also, it can be used in treatment of cardiac disease, hepatic disease, AIDS and various cancers. Recent meta-analysis showed that high selenium exposure was associated with decreased risk of several cancers. Selenium has an effect on anticarcinogesis through several mechanisms, which are regulation of cell cycles, apoptosis, DNA damage
OBJECTIVE: Cells, scaffold, and surgical approaches are important for regeneration of the lamina propria of the scarred vocal fold (VF). Microendoscopy of Reinke's space (MERS) is a surgical approach used to access the lamina propria. The present study evaluated MERS in the treatment of VF scarring as compared with standardized approaches for the treatment of VF scarring with adipose stem cell constructs. STUDY DESIGN: Animal study. SETTING: Academic center. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: VF injury was p
On average, ectopic thyroids are positioned in the embryotic decent path that emerges as a lingual thyroid or a thyroglossal duct cyst. It is uncommon for ectopic thyroids to be located in the lateral neck, which only represents 1%-3% of all cases. Any ectopic thyroids that emerge in the posterior lateral neck in pediatric patients should be regarded as an extremely unique case. We report a 13-year-old boy with ectopic thyroid tissue in the cervical lymph nodes with orthotopic euthyroid thyroid.
Multifocality increases the risk of recurrence in patients with papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC); however, it is unclear whether multifocality justifies more extensive or aggressive surgical treatment. Here, we evaluated the effect of the operative extent on the recurrence-free survival (RFS) of patients with multifocal PTC. Between 2010 and 2019, 718 patients with unilateral multifocal PTC were enrolled; 115 patients (16.0%) underwent ipsilateral thyroid lobectomy, and 606 patients (84.0%) und
