Professor Juhyun Kim's research lab focuses on understanding the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying renal and bone diseases, with a particular emphasis on the role of lipid metabolism and glucocorticoid signaling in tissue injury and remodeling. The lab investigates how cellular lipid homeostasis is disrupted in chronic kidney disease and glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis, exploring molecular regulators of lipid influx, synthesis, and efflux. Additionally, the lab examines the therapeutic potential of radiotherapy and immune checkpoint inhibitors in rare and aggressive cancers such as mucosal melanoma and pediatric brain tumors like diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG).

15The pathogenesis of glucocorticoid-induced (GC-induced) bone loss is unclear. For example, osteoblast apoptosis is enhanced by GCs in vivo, but they stimulate bone formation in vitro. This conundrum suggests that an intermediary cell transmits a component of the bone-suppressive effects of GCs to osteoblasts in the intact animal. Bone remodeling is characterized by tethering of the activities of osteoclasts and osteoblasts. Hence, the osteoclast is a potential modulator of the effect of GCs on o
A significant reduction of renal mass results in proteinuria, glomerulosclerosis, and tubulointerstitial injury, culminating in end-stage chronic renal failure (CRF). The accumulation of lipids in the kidney can cause renal disease. Uptake of oxidized lipoproteins via scavenger receptors, reabsorption of filtered protein-bound lipids via the megalin-cubilin complex, and increased glucose load per nephron can promote lipid accumulation in glomerular, tubular, and interstitial cells in CRF. Cellul
A higher radiation dose (> 60 Gy) is associated with increased LRC, PFS, and OS in patients with stage II-III esophageal cancer treated with definitive CRT.
Objective: Mucosal melanoma is an aggressive malignancy with a poor response to conventional therapies. The efficacy of radiotherapy (RT), especially combined with immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs), for this rare melanoma subtype remains unknown. We investigated the reciprocal effect of RT and ICI on mucosal melanoma patients. Materials and Methods: We identified 23 patients with 31 tumors who were treated with RT between July 2008 and February 2017. All patients received RT for
BACKGROUND: Accumulation of lipid in the kidney has been shown to promote renal disease. Heavy glomerular proteinuria (nephrotic syndrome) is associated with hyperlipidemia, lipiduria, and progressive kidney disease. Glomerular and tubular epithelial cells in the nephrotic kidney are exposed to large quantities of lipids bound to the filtered proteins whose uptake can raise cellular lipids. Cellular lipid homeostasis is regulated by the influx, synthesis and efflux of lipids. METHODS: We studied
Diffuse intrinsic pontine gliomas (DIPGs) account for 10%-20% of all central nervous system tumors in children and are the leading cause of death in children with brain tumors. Although many clinical trials have been conducted over the past decades, the survival outcome has remained unchanged. Over 90% of children die within 2 years of the diagnosis, and radiotherapy remains the standard treatment to date. To improve the prognosis, hyperfractionated and hypofractionated radiotherapy and/or addit
PURPOSE: To evaluate the outcomes of adjuvant radiotherapy (RT) and to analyze prognostic factors of survival in the International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) IB-IIA uterine cervical cancer. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 148 patients with FIGO IB-IIA uterine cervical cancer who underwent surgery followed by adjuvant RT at the Yonsei Cancer Center between June 1997 and December 2011. Adjuvant radiotherapy was delivered to the whole pe
PORT using modern technique markedly reduced local recurrence in retroperitoneal sarcoma patients, with low toxicity. The optimal RT technique, in terms of RT dose and target volume, should be further investigated.
BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to thoroughly analyze the reproducibility of radiomics feature extraction across three Image Biomarker Standardization Initiative (IBSI)-compliant platforms using a digital phantom for benchmarking. It uncovers high consistency among common features while also pointing out the necessity for standardization in computational algorithms and mathematical definitions due to unique platform-specific features. METHODS: We selected three widely used radiomics platfo
Pelvic RT could be beneficial especially for those with positive resection margins or nodal involvement after radical cystectomy. Radiation fields should be optimized based on the patient-specific risk factors.
